Jonathan Quick’s final NHL season closed the book on a Hall of Fame career, and it did so with the kind of steep drop-off that comes when a veteran goalie is trying to survive behind a team that’s slipping away.
At 40, Quick started 25 games for the Rangers in 2025-2026 and finished with a .891 save percentage, the third-worst mark of his career. He won six of those starts and took 17 regulation losses. The numbers point plenty of blame toward the team in front of him, but Quick didn’t exactly give the Rangers a lift, either.
What stands out most from his last year is that New York was actually better in front of Quick than it was in front of Igor Shesterkin. Even so, Quick’s own results lagged well behind what was expected.
His penalty-kill work held up pretty well, but his five-on-five numbers were rough. For a 40-year-old goalie who leaned heavily on reflexes, that kind of slide fit the profile.
There wasn’t much mystery to his final chapter. Quick was a backup in the twilight of his career, and the Rangers weren’t asking him to carry the load.
Two seasons earlier, he gave them strong work when they needed it most, during the run that came closest to a Cup in this stretch. By the end, though, the team had regressed and Quick’s game had gone with it.
He didn’t arrive with huge expectations in his last season, and the results landed right about where that suggested they would.
