Things haven’t been easy lately for Rangers fans. The team’s been in a bit of a funk since the release of “The Letter 2.0,” and with key injuries piling up and inconsistent play creeping in, the vibes around Madison Square Garden have been shaky at best. But in the middle of all that frustration, there’s been a welcome jolt of joy - and it’s coming from a very familiar face.
Henrik Lundqvist, the King himself, is back in the crease - at least for a moment.
The Hall of Fame goaltender recently posted a video of himself back in the pads, flashing that signature poise and glove hand that defined an era of Rangers hockey. It wasn’t just a casual skate, either. Watching Lundqvist slide across the ice again, even in a light setting, sent a wave of nostalgia through Rangers fans who remember the days when No. 30 was the last line of defense and the face of the franchise.
And now, he’s set to return to the Garden ice in front of the fans who adored him.
Lundqvist will suit up as part of the Rangers’ Alumni Classic at Madison Square Garden on Sunday, January 25. It’s a celebration of the franchise’s past, and Lundqvist’s presence alone makes it a must-watch for the Blueshirt faithful. With Igor Shesterkin sidelined, Jonathan Quick showing signs of wear, and Spencer Martin doing what he can in a tough spot, there’s something comforting - even cathartic - about seeing Lundqvist back in the crease, even if just for one night.
Let’s not forget just how dominant Lundqvist was during his playing days. He wrapped up his NHL career with a 459-310-96 regular season record, a .918 save percentage, and a 2.43 goals against average.
In the playoffs, he elevated his game even further, posting a .921 save percentage and a 2.30 GAA across 128 postseason appearances. He took home the Vezina Trophy in the 2011-12 season and finished third in Hart Trophy voting that same year - a rare feat for a goaltender, and a testament to just how valuable he was.
His career was cut short due to a heart condition, but his legacy in New York was already cemented long before he hung up the pads. And now, fans get a chance to see him back where he belongs - on Garden ice, in Rangers gear, with the crowd buzzing.
Lundqvist isn’t the only big name returning for the Alumni Classic. The roster is stacked with Rangers legends from multiple eras, making it a true celebration of the franchise’s rich history.
