Hartford, CT - A Battle at PeoplesBank Arena: Wolf Pack vs. Monsters
In an exhilarating showdown at PeoplesBank Arena, the Hartford Wolf Pack fought hard but ultimately fell short against the Cleveland Monsters, losing 3-2. The game was a rollercoaster of emotions, with both teams displaying grit and determination.
The opening period was a defensive standoff, as neither team managed to find the back of the net. Goaltenders Spencer Martin and Ivan Fedotov were stellar, each making nine saves to keep the scoreboard blank. Despite two power plays per side, the penalty killers reigned supreme, preventing any early breakthroughs.
The second period saw the Wolf Pack draw first blood. At 15:02, Scott Morrow capitalized on a faceoff win by Zakary Karpa. Morrow maneuvered into the slot and unleashed a low shot that slipped past Fedotov’s left pad, marking his second goal of the season and his first on home ice.
However, the Wolf Pack's lead was short-lived. Just 56 seconds later, a penalty in their own zone handed the Monsters their third power play opportunity.
Brendan Gaunce took advantage, firing a shot from the left-wing that beat Martin at 16:21, leveling the game at 1-1. This marked Gaunce's 12th goal of the season.
As the second period wound down, the Wolf Pack struggled to clear their zone. Luca Del Bel Belluz seized the opportunity, launching a shot from a prime spot to give the Monsters a 2-1 lead at 19:07.
The third period saw Morrow shine again, tying the game at 2-2 with his second goal of the night. He received a pass from Martin in the neutral zone, weaved into the offensive end, and sent a puck toward the net that deflected off Fedotov and in.
The game took another twist when a neutral zone dump-in caused chaos. The puck slowed in the left-wing corner, and Gaunce managed to find Zach Aston-Reese in front of the net. Aston-Reese capitalized on the opportunity, scoring at 17:47 to give the Monsters a decisive lead.
Trey Fix-Wolansky nearly tied it up with a dramatic wraparound attempt. Initially ruled a goal, a lengthy review overturned the call, preserving the Monsters' advantage. Despite a furious late push, Fedotov stood firm, securing the Monsters' first-ever regulation victory over the Wolf Pack.
The Wolf Pack will look to bounce back in a rematch against the Monsters at the newly renovated PeoplesBank Arena on Friday, March 13. Puck drop is at 7:00 p.m., with 'Wolf Pack Pregame' starting at 6:45 p.m. on AHLTV on FloHockey and Mixlr. Tickets are available now.
