Alexis Lafrenière's resurgence has been a bright spot in an otherwise challenging season for the New York Rangers. Known for his potential, Lafrenière hadn’t quite lived up to the generational talent expectations outside of his standout 2023-24 season, where he notched 28 goals, 29 assists, and 57 points. However, since returning from the Olympic break, the 24-year-old forward is playing some of the best hockey of his career.
So, what's fueling Lafrenière's elevated play? In just seven games post-break, he's racked up six goals, four assists, and ten points.
Head coach Mike Sullivan attributes this success to Lafrenière expanding his offensive game. “We encouraged Laf to find new ways to create offense,” Sullivan explains.
“He’s adding a grind game element, working beneath the hash marks, and creating chances from below the goal line with tips, deflections, and rebounds.”
Lafrenière's new linemates, Gabe Perreault and Mika Zibanejad, have been pivotal in this transformation. Their pass-first mentality allows Lafrenière to become a more potent scoring threat and play effectively without the puck. This trio has emerged as the Rangers' most explosive line, with Lafrenière's stats reflecting their synergy.
“Mika’s line has been exceptional recently,” Sullivan notes. “Their diverse styles complement each other, making them a formidable unit.”
Lafrenière's increased role on the first power-play unit has also provided more scoring opportunities, allowing him to leave a significant mark on games. Beyond the tactics and line changes, it’s clear that confidence is playing a huge role in Lafrenière’s performance.
“I’m playing with more confidence, skating better, and holding onto pucks more in the neutral zone,” Lafrenière shares. “I’m just trying to position myself better to get the puck.”
This newfound confidence and strategic play are turning Lafrenière into the player the Rangers always hoped he would be, offering a glimpse of hope and excitement for the future.
