Rangers forward Alexis Lafreniere earns NHL First Star honors after leading his team to a flawless week, showcasing newfound confidence and offensive prowess.

Alexis Lafrenière: NHL’s First Star of the Week

Alexis Lafrenière is turning heads and silencing critics with his standout performances, earning him the NHL’s First Star of the Week. The New York Rangers forward has been on a tear, leading his team to a perfect 4-0-0 week, their first such streak since October 2024. Lafrenière's impressive stats include five goals and seven points, topped off by a thrilling hat trick in a 4-0 victory over the Calgary Flames at Madison Square Garden.

This surge in performance has been marked by two game-winning goals, one against the Flames and another in a decisive 6-2 win over the Flyers in Philadelphia. These clutch performances have pushed his season total to five game-winners and 24 over his career. Lafrenière continued his hot streak with a goal and an assist in a 6-3 road win against the Winnipeg Jets, though he was held scoreless in a 4-2 triumph over the Minnesota Wild.

At 24, Lafrenière is showcasing a level of play that fans have been eagerly waiting for. Since a standout game against the Penguins on January 31, where he scored twice and added an assist, he has racked up nine goals and 15 points in just 11 games. This brings his season tally to 44 points in 66 games, a testament to his growing confidence and skill.

Lafrenière attributes his success to a newfound confidence and a focus on better positioning. “Just playing with a little bit more confidence,” he shared after his hat trick performance.

“Skating a little better, hanging onto pucks a little bit more in the neutral zone offensively. Just trying to put myself in better spots to get the puck.”

His work off the puck has been just as crucial, allowing him to capitalize on scoring opportunities. This evolution in his game comes at a crucial time, especially after facing criticism for not meeting expectations following his hefty seven-year, $52.15 million contract extension. However, with the dynamic chemistry alongside Mika Zibanejad and Gabe Perreault, those doubts are quickly fading.

Rangers coach Mike Sullivan has praised Lafrenière’s expanded offensive game. “He’s adding a dimension to his game that we’ll call the grind game,” Sullivan noted.

“Creating offense underneath the hash marks from below the goal line, getting inside, whether it be a net front, tips, deflections, rebounds. I think he’s doing a better job in that aspect of his offensive game.”

The Rangers and their fans are hopeful that Lafrenière’s current form is just the beginning of a sustained run of excellence.

In other NHL news, Dallas Stars goaltender Jake Oettinger earned the Second Star with a 3-0-0 record, a 1.65 goals-against average, and a .940 save percentage. Meanwhile, St. Louis Blues forward Jimmy Snuggerud took the Third Star, notching three goals and six points in three games.
