In a dominant display, the Mets shut out the Marlins 9-0, showcasing a blend of strong pitching and timely hitting. It all started with lefty Zach Thornton, who set the tone by delivering three scoreless innings, striking out three and keeping the Marlins at bay.
The Mets wasted no time in backing Thornton, exploding for four runs in the first inning. Tyrone Taylor and Ryan Clifford each knocked in runs with RBI doubles, giving the Mets an early cushion.
Carson Benge added to the offensive fireworks with an RBI triple in the second inning. But he wasn't done yet. In the sixth, Benge came through again, this time with a two-RBI single on a 3-2 pitch, pushing the Mets' lead to a commanding 9-0 after another four-run outburst.
On the mound, Devin Williams showcased his signature "airbender," striking out two in a hitless fifth inning, adding to the Marlins' woes.
Despite loading the bases a couple of times, the Marlins couldn't find a way to score. The Mets' bullpen, featuring Craig Kimbrel, Ofreidy Gómez, Matt Turner, Channing Austin, and Brian Metoyer, each contributed a scoreless inning to seal the victory.
The Mets' combination of solid pitching and explosive offense made a clear statement: they're a force to be reckoned with.
