Carson Benge is stepping into the spotlight as the Mets' new right fielder, a move that’s got fans buzzing with excitement. Announced on Monday, Benge’s addition to the Opening Day roster is a testament to his impressive performance in the Grapefruit League and a bit of serendipity with a teammate’s injury.
As the Mets' No. 2 prospect, Benge dazzled with a .366/.435/.439 slash line, showcasing his versatility with a double, a triple, and a stolen base over 46 plate appearances. At just 23, he’s set to bat near the bottom of the lineup, likely in the eighth spot, where he finished Spring Training strong.
“I came in confident, knowing I could compete with the best,” Benge shared. “Thinking otherwise would be a disservice to myself.”
The Mets' decision to keep their corner outfield options open this offseason paved the way for Benge’s rise. Despite a rocky start, going 0-for-5 initially, he turned it around with a .417 average and solid defense. His arm strength even prompted a strategic shift, moving Juan Soto to left field.
Benge is the highest-ranked Mets prospect to debut since Francisco Alvarez in 2022, and his journey is a testament to hard work and talent. Drafted 19th overall in 2024, he quickly climbed the ranks, impressing at every level. His Minor League stats - a .280/.389/.468 line with 17 homers and 25 stolen bases - highlight his potential, though a stint at Triple-A Syracuse tested him with a .178 average.
This spring, Benge silenced any doubts, displaying a mature two-strike approach and using the whole field effectively. While his power numbers weren’t eye-popping, his overall skill set was undeniable.
“He’s got a quick bat and is a smart hitter,” said hitting coach Troy Snitker. “He can surprise you with a shot over the shortstop’s head or launch one 430 feet. It’s impressive.”
The competition for right field came down to Benge and veteran Mike Tauchman. Unfortunately, Tauchman’s knee injury in the final Grapefruit League game cleared the path for Benge’s debut.
Benge will join forces with Soto and Luis Robert Jr. in the outfield, promising a formidable defensive lineup. Reflecting on his achievement, Benge expressed pure joy: “Knowing I worked hard for this, and seeing it come true, is pretty cool.”
The Mets are eager to see what Benge brings to the field, and if his spring performance is any indication, fans are in for a treat.
