Mets Prospects Are Sending Very Different Signals In Arizona

An uneven Arizona Fall League week saw fluctuating performances from the Mets' prospects, revealing challenges and victories in their ongoing development.

The Mets’ Arizona Fall League group hit the stretch run with a rough week, capped by a rain-shortened loss and a pair of lopsided defeats.

Surprise was outscored badly across the final games of the week, starting with a 20-4 loss to Salt River on Tuesday, Oct. 27, followed by an 11-3 loss to Peoria on Wednesday, Oct. 28.

The Saguaros did bounce back the next day, rolling past Mesa 13-2 on Thursday, Oct. 29, before falling again 17-5 to Scottsdale. Friday, Oct. 30 was canceled because of rain, and Saturday, Oct. 31 brought another setback as Salt River beat Surprise 11-2 in a game that was shortened to six innings.

At the plate, Bruin Agbayani went 0-for-3 with a run, two walks and two strikeouts in Wednesday’s win over Mesa. Cole Mathis was 0-for-4 with a run, two walks and two strikeouts in Thursday’s victory over Scottsdale.

On the season, Agbayani is hitting .103/.286/.154 with four hits in 39 at-bats, including two doubles, 10 walks and 16 strikeouts. He has also gone 2-for-2 on stolen bases.

Mets Just Sent A Strong Signal With An Unusual Infield Move

The Mets added another infield option this week, signing Christian Cairo to a one-year split contract after claiming him off waivers from the Phillies. Cairo spent most of the 2026 season at Triple-A with Philadelphia before ending the year at Syracuse, giving New York a player it has already seen up close in its own system and a bit more organizational depth in the middle of the diamond.

It also came as part of a broader roster shuffle, with the Mets outrighting several players from the 40-man roster, including Cristian Pache, Eric Wagaman, Philip Abner, and Cameron Weston. Moves like this often say as much about the clubs winter priorities as any splashier transaction, and New York is clearly continuing to sort through which pieces it wants to keep in the mix as the roster takes shape. Mets Add Another Pitching Wild Card To Their 40-Man Mix

The Mets added another arm to their 40-man mix by claiming right-hander Jack Anderson off waivers from the Twins, a move that fits the clubs recent habit of collecting pitchers who can cover multiple roles. Anderson has already seen big league time with Minnesota and Boston, and his brief major league sample last year came with a 2.19 ERA, enough to make him an intriguing depth piece as the roster takes shape.

Anderson also arrives with two minor league options remaining, which gives the Mets some flexibility if they want to shuttle him between New York and Syracuse as needed. For now, he looks like the kind of pitcher who could be deployed as an opener or a long reliever, a useful profile for a staff that always seems to need one more option ready to absorb innings when the schedule gets messy. Mets Just Got A Rare Rookie Bright Spot Fans Will Love

The Mets had a small but notable showing among the 2026 Rawlings Gold Glove Award finalists, with Carson Benge, Luis Torrens and Nolan McLean all earning recognition for their work in the field. For a club that has spent plenty of time chasing more obvious headlines, having three players in the finalist mix was a reminder that the defense has started to draw real attention.

Nolan McLean ended up taking home the Gold Glove at starting pitcher, a rare achievement that stands out even more because he became the first rookie pitcher to win the award. Torrens and Benge were finalists in their own right, even if neither came away with the hardware, and the group gives the Mets a defensive storyline worth filing away as they look ahead. [Read more 🡒]
