The second week of the Arizona Fall League brought a little bit of everything for the Mets’ group in Surprise: a pair of postponements, a string of lopsided wins, and a few individual stat lines that stood out along the way.
Surprise opened the week with a 5-4 win over Glendale on Sunday, October 11, with first baseman Cole Mathis leaving his mark by going 1-for-4 with a run, an RBI and his first home run of the fall. Boston Baro reached base twice with a pair of walks in the same game, while Bruin Agbayani scored twice despite going 0-for-3.
Monday’s game was postponed because of inclement weather, and Tuesday’s was postponed because of power.
When play resumed Wednesday, Surprise edged Peoria 9-8, then turned around and put together a much bigger night Thursday in a 17-8 rout of Glendale. Mathis came through again, finishing 2-for-5 with two runs, two RBI and a walk.
Baro didn’t have a hit, but he still found his way on three times, drawing three walks while also scoring a run and driving in another. Agbayani added a busy line of his own, scoring three times, picking up an RBI, drawing two walks and stealing his first base of the AFL season.
Brendan Girton and Calvin Ziegler both took the mound in that Thursday win. Girton was sharp, striking out three in a scoreless inning without allowing a hit or a walk. Ziegler ran into trouble, giving up two hits and two earned runs in one inning while also issuing a walk and hitting a batter.
On Friday, Surprise beat Mesa 7-5, and Ryan Lambert threw a clean inning in relief, allowing no hits or runs while striking out one. The week ended with another dominant result Saturday, a 10-0 shutout of Glendale, before Sunday brought a scheduled off day.
Through the season to date, Agbayani is hitting .091/.259/.136 with 2 hits in 22 at-bats, plus a double, 5 walks, 10 strikeouts and 1-for-1 on stolen-base attempts. Baro has posted a .143/.455/.143 line with 2 hits in 14 at-bats, 8 walks, 5 strikeouts and 2-for-2 on steals. Mathis is at .167/.310/.292 with 4 hits in 24 at-bats, including the lone home run, along with 5 walks and 3 strikeouts.
On the pitching side, Irving Cota has been a strikeout machine, piling up 12 punchouts in 7.2 innings while allowing just 1 hit. Girton has yet to allow a run in 2.1 innings across three appearances, and Lambert has also been scoreless in three outings. Peyton Prescott has worked 5.0 innings over three starts, and Ziegler’s early line has been rough, with five earned runs in 2.1 innings.

Mets Quietly Look Better And Better After This Bullpen Trade
Huascar Brazobn had quietly become a useful piece for the Mets after arriving in 2024, giving the bullpen a dependable arm who could handle different roles and take on meaningful innings. Even after a strong first half in 2026, the Mets decided to move him at the deadline, a decision that looked like a standard bullpen shuffle at the time.
Since going to the White Sox, Brazobns results have trended the wrong way, with a higher ERA and a stint on the injured list. Meanwhile, the return is beginning to look more interesting for New York, as prospects Gabe Davis and Zach Franklin have each flashed promise in the minors and given the front office a little more reason to feel good about the trades long-term value. Mets Suddenly Have A Tough Call On One Departed Depth Piece
MJ Melendez and Vidal Brujan have both elected free agency after the season, leaving the Mets to weigh whether either depth piece still fits into the picture going forward. Melendez got a brief look in the majors but never really got going with the club, while both players spent time in Triple-A and turned in stronger stretches there than they did on the big league stage.
The question now is whether the Mets want to circle back on either player at all, and the answer may be different for each. Brujan does not appear to fill an obvious current need, but Melendez could still be viewed as a possible minor league depth option if the organization wants to keep some familiar coverage in the system. Either way, their futures with the team are unsettled. [Read more 🡒]
Mets May Need To Move Fast For This Impact Bat
The market for Teruaki Sato is now officially open, and the Mets are among the teams expected to take a serious look. Hanshin has granted his request to be posted, putting the power bat in play for all 30 clubs this offseason after a historic year in Japan. With David Stearns having already been in Japan to watch one of Satos games, New York has at least done the early legwork on a player who could quickly become one of the most sought-after names available.
For the Mets, the timing matters because Sato is expected to draw a lucrative multiyear deal and there should be plenty of competition. New York has made a habit of staying involved when impact talent reaches the open market, and this is the kind of profile that fits a club looking to add more thump. The question now is whether the Mets are ready to push when the bidding gets real, or whether another team moves first on a bat that could reshape an offense. [Read more 🡒]
