Mets Just Sent A Clear Message About Their Newest Fan Favorites

In a surprising twist, the New York Mets swap Freddy Peralta's jersey giveaway for an exciting Spider-Man meme T-shirt, spotlighting promising rookies Carson Benge and A.J. Ewing.

The Mets’ Wednesday giveaway at Citi Field got a last-minute makeover, and the replacement comes with a little extra flair.

Instead of the Freddy Peralta jersey that was originally on the schedule, the first 15,000 fans in attendance will get a Carson Benge/A.J. Ewing T-shirt. The design shows the two rookie outfielders pointing at each other in the familiar Spider-Man meme pose.

The switch makes sense on paper and in the moment. The club had announced the Peralta jersey giveaway earlier in the season, but that plan turned awkward after the right-hander was traded to Tampa Bay on Aug.

  1. The Mets quietly took the promotion off the calendar, then announced the new shirt on Monday.

That same night, Benge and Ewing gave fans another reason to like the choice. In the Mets’ 2-1 win over the Padres, the two combined to throw out three baserunners at home plate in the first two innings.

“Once we knew we needed a new giveaway for Aug. 19, our in-house creative team worked to develop something we felt would resonate with our fans,” said Mets vice president of ballpark experience James Benesh. “Given the excitement around Carson and A.J. and how quickly our fans have embraced them, they felt like a natural fit. Our team came up with a great concept, and we were able to move quickly to bring it to life and create something we think our fans will be excited to take home.”

For at least one Mets fan, the choice is easy.

“100%,” said Mets fan James Ladalia of Massapequa Park. “I mean, they’re the future of the team.

They’re blossoming superstars, in my opinion. Definitely Benge.

He’s amazing in rightfield. So I would definitely rather have a T-shirt with them than Freddy Peralta.”

The Peralta jerseys aren’t disappearing completely. A team spokesman told Newsday that the No. 51 jerseys were sent to the club’s academy in the Dominican Republic, where they’ll be handed out during clinics and other events.

Peralta, who is from the Dominican Republic, had already been honored by the Mets once this year with a bobblehead giveaway on July 25. Both promotional dates reflected how the team viewed him as an important piece of a contender.

Instead, his season has gone in a different direction. He finished 5-9 with a 4.99 ERA in 22 starts for the Mets and has struggled again since the trade, going 0-1 with a 7.53 ERA in three starts for the Rays.

The Mets have seen this kind of awkward promotional pivot before. In August 2013, they traded outfielder Marlon Byrd on the same day they were set to give away a T-shirt with his name on it.

That time, the Mets still handed out the Byrd “Let It Fly” shirt, along with other leftover giveaway items, and even added two tickets to a September game, according to ESPN.com.

Mets Roster Shuffle Just Created An Awkward Twist With The Cubs

A late-summer roster shuffle has tied the Mets and Cubs together in a way that feels more awkward than ordinary. Chicago claimed Gabriel Arias off waivers from the Mets to help shore up its infield depth after an injury left the club thin at shortstop, while New York moved quickly to fill the opening by bringing in Christopher Morel, a player with his own ties to the Cubs organization.

Arias is expected to be activated soon in Chicago, giving the Cubs another option at a position they had to reinforce in a hurry. For the Mets, the move is less about one player than about what comes next, as they continue to sort out Morels role for the rest of the season and see whether this swap turns into a useful piece of business or just another brief stop on a busy transaction wire. Mets Fans Finally Got A Citi Field Moment Worth Laughing At

Citi Field had its most memorable crowd interaction of the season when a raccoon was filmed reaching through a hole in the concrete to snatch peanuts from the stands during a Mets game. The clip spread quickly on social media and gave fans something to smile about in a year that has otherwise been defined by disappointment, uneven play and thinning attendance.

For a team searching for anything that feels a little lighter, the moment landed because it was so absurdly on-brand for a season that has been hard to enjoy. The raccoon did not fix the bigger issues around the Mets, but it did provide a rare bit of harmless theater at Citi Field, and for once, the punchline was coming from outside the dugout. Mets Just Got Pulled Into A Tarik Skubal Question Fans Will Debate

Tarik Skubal is already the kind of free-agent name that can turn a winter into a referendum on ambition, and the Mets have now been pulled into the middle of that conversation. According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, the Mets and Dodgers are viewed as the two clubs most likely to make serious runs at the left-hander, a listing that immediately fits New Yorks usual profile as a team willing to spend when the market gets big.

For the Mets, the intrigue is as much about strategy as it is about fit. Skubal has also been tied to a possible return to Detroit, while his price tag and the possibility of a salary cap arriving after an expected MLB lockout could shape how aggressive every bidder really wants to be. Around the league, rumors of New Yorks interest often spark questions about whether the Mets are setting the market or simply being used to raise it, and that is the part fans will be debating until the bidding gets real.
