The Mets’ deadline plans are coming into focus, and Freddy Peralta looks like a name headed straight for the exit.
After sending A.J. Minter to the Minnesota Twins on Thursday night, New York appears ready to keep moving.
Clay Holmes and Brooks Raley are also viewed as possible trade chips, but Peralta is the one drawing the most attention. According to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, the Mets have “no plans” to offer him a contract extension.
“They are also trying to trade starter Freddy Peralta, and have no plans to sign him to an extension,” Nightengale reports.
That kind of stance makes the picture pretty clear. Unless something changes fast, Peralta is almost certainly on the move this summer.
It’s a sharp turn from where things might have looked at the start of the year, when an extension could have seemed possible. Instead, the former two-time All-Star has struggled badly in his first season with the Mets, putting up a 4.99 ERA with -0.2 bWAR and a 5-9 record in 22 starts.
His 83 ERA+ is the worst of his MLB career, and that’s a problem for New York on multiple levels. The Mets not only took a big swing to get him from the Milwaukee Brewers over the offseason, but they’re now staring at a trade market that has been weakened by his performance.
There’s no path to getting back what they gave up for him at the 2026 MLB trade deadline. Still, Peralta’s 2025 season ERA of 2.70 may be enough to keep some teams interested in the upside, which gives the Mets a chance to land a decent prospect package.
Even so, after just a little more than half a season, the return probably won’t match the price New York paid. With no extension planned, there’s little reason to hold onto him through the deadline. The Mets are selling, and Peralta looks like one of the clearest signs of it.
