The Mets’ affiliates delivered a mixed bag on September 13, with Syracuse putting up runs in a wild one and Binghamton getting squeezed in a frustrating shutout.
Syracuse outlasted St. Paul 9-7 in a game that turned into a full-on bullpen patch job.
Eight different Mets took the mound, and they did just enough to back up an offense that kept landing punches. MJ Melendez was the headliner again, backing up his four-hit night with two more home runs.
Billy Amick also went deep for his sixth homer at Triple-A, even though he’s still sitting at .221. Emilien Pitre chipped in two hits and a walk, pushing his OPS back over .800 at the level.
Melendez finished 2-for-5 with two runs, two homers and three RBI, while Vidal Bruján went 3-for-5 with a run and an RBI. Ronny Mauricio added two hits, two RBI and a run, and Pitre went 2-for-4 with two runs, an RBI and a walk. D’Andre Smith doubled, scored twice and walked, and Amick’s lone hit was the big one: a homer with two RBI.
The pitching line was a grind. Ofreidy Gómez, Dan Hammer and Ben Simon all got hit hard enough to leave Syracuse in a hole at different points, though Chayce McDermott, Dylan Ross, Matt Turner, Cameron Weston and Jefry Yan helped finish the job. Ross picked up the win, Turner and Weston each logged holds, and Yan earned the save.
Binghamton’s night was the opposite: almost no offense, too many mistakes, and a 1-0 loss to Portland. The offense had more errors than runs and nearly as many caught stealings as hits, which says plenty about how the game went. Gabe Davis was the bright spot on the mound, and the note there is that he continues to look like a savvy trade acquisition.
Mitch Voit went 1-for-4 but also committed an error and was caught stealing twice, making him the night’s GOAT of the Night by the report. Marco Vargas also had an error, Chris Suero was caught stealing once, and the rest of the lineup never found much room to work. Eli Serrano III had the only other hit besides Voit, and no one else in the order reached that column.
Davis took the loss after allowing one earned run in 4.2 innings, striking out three. Bryce Conley was sharp in relief, giving Binghamton 2.2 scoreless innings with five strikeouts, and Bryce Jenkins finished with a clean frame.
The report’s Star of the Night was MJ Melendez, and on a night when Syracuse kept the scoreboard busy, that choice made sense.
