The Mets kicked off their road trip with a solid 4-2 victory over the Cardinals at Busch Stadium, showcasing a mix of strategic hitting and resilient pitching.
Francisco Lindor set the tone right from the start. He opened the game with a hustle-driven triple to right field, setting the stage for Bo Bichette, who grounded out to bring Lindor home and give the Mets an early lead.
On the mound, Clay Holmes had a rocky start, walking JJ Wetherholt who eventually scored on an Alec Burleson single, tying the game at one. However, both Holmes and Cardinals’ starter Kyle Leahy found their rhythm as the game progressed, each dodging threats from the opposing lineups.
The Mets regained the lead in the fifth when Bichette drove in Carson Benge, marking his second RBI of the game. The offense kept rolling in the sixth.
Jared Young's double brought Brett Baty home, ending Leahy’s day on the mound. Reliever Matt Svanson struggled, loading the bases and walking Juan Soto to extend the Mets' lead to 4-1.
Holmes, despite a high pitch count, returned for the sixth but was pulled after Nolan Gorman’s solo shot narrowed the gap to 4-2. Tobias Myers took over, delivering a stellar performance by striking out three of the four batters he faced without allowing a baserunner.
Brooks Raley maintained the momentum in the eighth, giving up just one hit, while Devin Williams sealed the deal in the ninth with a dominant display, including a strikeout to end the game.
Every Mets starter reached base, with all but one collecting a hit. The lineup saw some interesting choices with Benge in center and Jared Young at first, while Luis Robert Jr. was rested for most of the game. Despite these changes, the Mets executed their game plan effectively, securing a strong start to their road trip.
