J.J. McCarthy gave Minnesota fans exactly the kind of Sunday they didn’t want to see.
In his first real action for the New York Giants - not counting a random gimmick package - the former Vikings quarterback nearly dragged his new team all the way back from a 24-point hole against the New Orleans Saints. New York was trailing by that margin with less than 12 minutes left in the fourth quarter when the Giants benched Jameis Winstion and handed the offense to McCarthy.
The first flashpoint was rough. On his fourth pass attempt, McCarthy was picked off by Saints cornerback Martin Emerson.
He shook it off fast.
On his next drive, McCarthy helped the Giants string together a six-play, 45-yard march that ended with a five-yard rushing touchdown from Tyron Tracy. New York then went for two, and McCarthy delivered by finding Isaiah Likely on the right side of the end zone.
After the Giants’ defense forced a 3-and-out, McCarthy got another shot and cashed it in for his first touchdown pass of the 2026 season.
That set up a tense finish. New York still trailed by seven and had one final chance to tie or win it in the closing minutes. McCarthy moved the offense all the way to the Saints’ 14-yard line, but with 12 seconds left, he took the snap on 4th-and-1 and threw incomplete into the back of the end zone, ending the comeback bid and sealing the win for New Orleans.
Still, the box score was enough to stir up the Vikings conversation all over again.
McCarthy finished with 243 passing yards, one touchdown, one interception and a 52.4 percent completion rate, plus 26 rushing yards. And even though he was on the field for only about 75 percent of the fourth quarter, his showing was enough to get Minnesota fans talking during the Vikings’ bye week.
A few of them were loud about it online, including this reaction: “I just wanted to see another game or two before calling him a bust, and a bunch of people deemed that to be an idiotic stance 🤷🏼♂️”
Another wrote, “If this is how he plays for the rest of the year, this team legit needs to win the SB or Teasley and KOC can both go.”
Bob “The BS Show” Sansevere added, “J.J. McCarthy just engineered two TD drives in under two minutes, with the second one a 24-yard TD pass. Why can't the Vikings find a QB like McCarthy?”
It’s still early, and the source of this story doesn’t pretend otherwise. There’s no final verdict on whether Minnesota made the right call by trading McCarthy to New York earlier this season. But Sunday’s performance absolutely gives fuel to the people in Minnesota who think the Vikings let something slip away.
And if the Giants stick with McCarthy, the next step could come quickly. Given how he played against the Saints, it wouldn’t be a surprise if New York names him the starter over Winston for Week 7 against the Houston Texans. If that happens, plenty of Vikings fans will be watching closely to see what McCarthy does next.

Mets Look Ready To Move On From Mark Vientos For Good
Mark Vientos has become one of the more obvious names to watch as the Mets look ahead, especially with several clubs around the league trying to patch holes at first base or designated hitter. Arizona, San Diego and Cleveland each make some sense as landing spots because each has a need that Vientos could help fill, and for a team looking to trim costs, his profile could be attractive enough to keep in the conversation even without a big market bidding war.
For the Mets, the bigger picture is less about one specific trade partner than the sense that a change may be coming sooner rather than later. None of the interest being floated is confirmed, and theres no official transaction on the board yet, but the fit with those three teams does underline how movable Vientos could be if New York decides to keep reshaping the roster around other priorities. Mets Reunion Could Shape The Next Step For Several Key Bats
The Mets are at a familiar crossroads on the hitting side, with the club scheduled to meet with Kevin Long about a possible role on the staff. Long is no stranger to Queens, having guided the lineup during the teams 2015 World Series run, and he arrives on the market after being let go by the Phillies following five seasons in Philadelphia.
His possible return comes at an important moment for a group of bats that still need direction, especially after the Mets moved on from director of hitting Jeff Albert after the regular season. If Long ends up back in the organization, his presence could have real impact on the development paths of players like Brett Baty, A.J. Ewing and Jared Young, which is why this interview could matter well beyond a routine coaching search. [Read more 🡒]
Mets Took A Big Center Field Gamble And Fans Can Finally Judge It
When the Mets made the move to bring in Luis Robert Jr. to man center field, the idea was straightforward: stabilize a premium defensive spot and get more offense out of it. Instead, back issues sent Robert to the Injured List for a significant stretch, and A.J. Ewing quietly went from fill-in to everyday center fielder while the club waited for the original plan to sort itself out.
By the time Robert was ready to return, the Mets had already made their choice about where the long-term value was. Ewings role only grew in Roberts absence, and the organization ultimately let Robert go on waivers to the Orioles rather than hold onto a player tied to a $20 million option. It left New York with a clearer picture of the gamble it took in center field, even if the final evaluation will keep unfolding from here. [Read more 🡒]
