The Brewers missed out on Tarik Skubal, and that leaves Milwaukee searching for another way to strengthen a rotation that still needs help before the Monday 6 p.m. EDT trade deadline.
One suggestion making the rounds comes from Bleacher Report’s Zachary D. Rymer, who pointed the Brewers toward the New York Mets. Rymer argued that Milwaukee should try to solve two problems at once by asking for both starter Clay Holmes and reliever Luke Weaver in the same deal.
“The Brewers should have been the team to trade for Tarik Skubal. Instead, they've already missed out on him and old friend Freddy Peralta. Bang up job, guys,” Rymer wrote.
From there, he made the case for Holmes as the starting-pitching answer Milwaukee still needs.
“But since Milwaukee also still needs a starter, why not angle for Clay Holmes to come with Weaver? He was terrific before he broke his leg on a comebacker in May, and he has the kind of stuff that would make for a nice pairing with Brewers ace Jacob Misiorowski,” Rymer wrote.
Holmes is nearing a return from his rehab assignment, while Weaver has been one of the top relievers in baseball in 2026. The Mets are viewed as one of the most obvious sellers on the market, which is why they’ve surfaced as a possible fit for a Brewers club trying to patch the rotation and keep pace in October.
A Misiorowski-Holmes combination would not match the impact of landing Skubal, but it would still give Milwaukee a legitimate shot to challenge the Dodgers.
