Tyler Kolek’s path with the Knicks was already narrow. Jose Alvarado’s latest words may have made it even tighter.
Kolek entered the conversation as the clear outsider in New York’s point guard picture, even after showing some flashes and making progress last season. He can still expect a few chances across the grind of an 82-game schedule, but unless injuries change the math, the minutes at the position are expected to belong to Jalen Brunson and Alvarado.
That matters even more after Alvarado spoke recently about where he stands. In an interview with Slam Magazine, the reserve guard made it plain that he still has plenty left to chase.
"I still haven't done what I wanted to do with my career. I got a lot of goals I want to push for," Alvarado said (h/t The Knicks Recap).
"I want to be in the conversation for 6MOTY one day. Obviously, I got to work."
For Knicks fans, that’s the kind of message they want to hear. It says the hunger is still there, even after a championship and the extension that followed it. And it cuts against the idea that a title run might lead to any kind of early-season letdown.
That seems to fit the tone of this roster overall. Brunson has set the standard, and Alvarado’s comments suggest he’s not walking into camp satisfied with anything he’s already done. The expectation now is that he’ll push for even more, and that could mean a larger role if he comes out strong in training camp and preseason.
For Kolek, the problem is obvious. He’s a smart passer and a better shooter than he was, and there are plenty of teams where that skill set might translate into a steadier role. But in New York, he’s buried behind one of the league’s best point guards and one of the better reserve point guards around.
That’s why Alvarado’s mindset matters. If he really is coming for a bigger season and a run at Sixth Man of the Year, Kolek’s job gets even harder to crack. The third-string spot looks more locked in than ever, and the leash for Alvarado figures to be long because of what he’s already done for the Knicks.
Kolek will get his chances as the season drags on. But right now, the situation is leaning harder and harder toward Alvarado being the player the Knicks trust first.
