The Yankees went into the trade deadline needing a jolt, and they found one in Luis Garcia.
New York is acquiring the first baseman from the Nationals in a four-player deal that sends pitchers Jack Cebert, Ben Grable, Yovanny Cruz and Jake Bird to Washington. For the Yankees, it’s a clear attempt to patch over an offense that has gone quiet. For the Nationals, it’s a bet on arms - both for now and down the road.
Garcia should walk right into the middle of the Yankees’ lineup. That’s the idea, anyway.
The team has been stuck in a brutal offensive stretch over the last six weeks, and Garcia brings the kind of contact-and-power blend New York has been missing. He leads the NL in slugging percentage and ranks third in all of baseball in that category, which tells you why the Yankees pushed to get him.
He also fits the ballpark. Yankee Stadium should reward his pop, and New York can use him at designated hitter or first base alongside Ben Rice, with Paul Goldschmidt getting chances against lefties.
There are limits here, though. Garcia doesn’t hit lefties well, and he doesn’t draw many walks.
The defense is another issue, since he’s a mediocre-at-best defender and the Yankees already have their best hitter this year at first base. And once Judge, Cody Bellinger and Giancarlo Stanton return, the fit gets even messier.
None of those three are close to coming back, so that’s a problem for later.
For now, though, the Yankees are simply taking the bat. Garcia is under contract beyond this year, and after weeks of offensive frustration, that alone makes the move feel necessary.
The Nationals are taking a different route. They lose Garcia’s production, but they’re trying to rebuild a bullpen that has been among the worst in baseball. In return, they get two pitchers who were top-30 prospects in the Yankees’ system and two relievers who can help right away.
Cebert and Grable will head to Washington’s minor league teams, where the Nationals will hope they can develop into future options. Cruz and Bird are a different story.
Cruz brings 100 mph heat and plenty of raw talent, even if he has only a handful of games under his belt. Bird struggled with the Yankees, but he arrives as a veteran with experience and a chance to reset in a new environment.
Losing Garcia does create a hole in the lineup, but Washington believes its offense can absorb it. Abimelec Ortiz and Andres Chaparro are the likeliest players to get looks at first base, while James Wood and C.J. Abrams remain at the center of everything.
