Stephen A. Smith had plenty to say about James Dolan on Tuesday’s edition of ESPN’s First Take, and he wasted no time zeroing in on what he sees as a troubling pattern as the new season gets underway.
Smith said Dolan is once again getting in the way, and he pointed first to the status of Leon Rose and World Wide Wes, William Wesley. In his view, both deserve new deals after helping end New York’s 53-year drought and delivering a championship.
“Let me put everybody in New York on blast. That damn James Dolan is getting in the way again.
We have some concerns. First of all, I don't know if it's news or not.
Where the hell is the extension for Leon Rose? Where the hell is the extension for World Wide Wes, William Wesley?
World Wide Wes and Leon Rose ended a 53-year drought and brought a championship to New York. Where's their extension?
Where is it?”

Stephen A. Smith shared his thoughts on Knicks ownership and a potential Karl-Anthony Towns extension 👀

He then shifted to Karl-Anthony Towns and the absence of an extension there as well. Smith made clear he was not arguing that Towns should receive the full max, but he said cutting him short by $77 million is not the way to handle it.
“Number two, Big Perk, I'm not gonna tell you that Karl-Anthony Towns deserves the max. I understand that you got Brunson and Anunoby coming down the pike, but you don't disrespect that man by cutting him short by $77 million.
You don't do that. You give him a respectable offer.
You give him an offer that says, ‘Okay. Listen, we need you to take this hit.
Jalen Brunson took this hit. We need you to do it, too.'
So it ain't 277. It might be 225, 227, something along those lines, because Brunson took a hit, too.
You might not like it, but it's not disrespectful… First of all, he's worth the 277 million in today's NBA economy. It's just that in light of other people you have to take care of…right … it's gonna call for some level of sacrifice, but you don't disrespect him.
Karl-Anthony Towns deserves more money, and most importantly, he deserves to be respected and appreciated.”
Smith also said the bigger worry is that Dolan won’t change after the title, suggesting the championship could become a reason to settle in rather than push forward.
“I'ma tell you why New York has a problem, Big Perk, and I'll give it back to you. They got a problem because that same damn James Dolan that stunk up the joint for years running the New York Knicks franchise, finally after 27 years at the helm, won a chip.
It wouldn't surprise me at all if his mentality is, ‘All right, I, I delivered a chip, so now we can wait another quarter century before we winning again.' He's the kinda person that'll have that kinda attitude and take that for granted, and that is my fear, Big Perk.”

Mike Brown Brings A LeBron Story Into The Knicks Title Defense
The Knicks finally opened their season after winning the NBA championship in June, and the mood around the defending champions already has the feel of a team trying to manage both celebration and expectation. New coach Mike Brown, who once coached LeBron James in Cleveland, used the moment to reflect on what it takes to stay at the top in this league, especially for a group that now has to defend a title with everyone circling the same target.
Brown pointed to James as the standard for staying productive deep into a career, praising the way the veteran has kept himself ready year after year. For a Knicks team that is being mentioned alongside the Spurs, Thunder and 76ers among the favorites this season, the message lands cleanly: repeating is less about looking back at last spring and more about building the habits that let elite teams last. James Wiseman Just Made The Knicks Center Battle A Lot More Interesting
James Wisemans preseason debut gave the Knicks exactly the kind of reminder they were hoping for as they sort through the center mix. In his first game action since a season-ending Achilles injury last December, Wiseman flashed on both ends of the floor, finishing with eight points on 3-of-4 shooting, five rebounds and a block in just over nine minutes.
The timing matters because the battle for interior minutes has been one of the more closely watched parts of New Yorks camp, and Wisemans return adds another layer to it. The early read from around the team is that he has put himself in position to be part of the Opening Night picture, which makes his next few outings worth tracking closely. [Read more 🡒]
Knicks Title Plan Now Hinges On Karl-Anthony Towns Decision
The Knicks have their long-term picture tied up in Karl-Anthony Towns, and the next stretch of calendar time could shape how aggressively they plan around him. Towns will be eligible to sign an extension beginning in August 2026 and running through June 2027, giving New York a window to lock in a centerpiece before the situation starts to drift toward uncertainty.
A new deal would give the Knicks clarity as they try to build around Towns, but the math is not fully straightforward. The team has already put a substantial proposal on the table, yet Towns also has a player option for the 2027-28 season if nothing gets done, which would leave New York waiting to see whether the relationship settles into the long term or moves closer to free agency in 2028.
