Knicks Young Core Just Got A Timely Boost From A Familiar Name

With Dink Pate unexpectedly joining the Knicks' G-League affiliate, the team gains a surprise asset as they navigate a challenging draft landscape.

Dink Pate’s path back to the Knicks’ system took a sharp turn this week, and New York gets a little more young talent because of it.

Pate, who spent time with the G-League Ignite and Mexico City Capitanes, went unselected in the 2025 NBA Draft. He looked like a strong candidate for a two-way deal with the Knicks, but New York used its third and final two-way spot on Tosan Evbuomwan and later Dillon Jones.

The reason Pate didn’t sign an NBA contract earlier was tied to his effort to preserve NCAA eligibility. His commitment to Providence College made that plan clear, as he looked to take advantage of the NIL landscape after three seasons against professional adults in the G-League.

That route is now closed. Pate was ruled ineligible for NCAA Basketball, pushing him back toward the NBA track. On Saturday, the Knicks brought the 20-year-old back into the fold with an Exhibit 10 contract for their G-League affiliate, according to Hoops Hype’s Michael Scotto.

For a Knicks organization that has spent heavily in trades for Josh Hart, Karl-Anthony Towns, and especially Mikal Bridges, every young piece matters. Those moves helped fuel the run that ended with the 2026 NBA Finals and the ring ceremony at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday night, but they also left Leon Rose’s front office with less margin for error when it comes to the draft.

That matters even more in a setting where the Knicks can’t afford many mistakes. If an organization is going to keep operating near the league’s second apron and keep building around a contender, the few picks it does make need to count.

Pate’s return gives that group another swing. Pacôme Dadiet has already given Rose some validation, but the French wing’s preseason was underwhelming and didn’t offer much evidence that he’s ready to help right away this season.

Tyler Kolek, meanwhile, was acquired with three second-round picks and appears buried behind Jordan Clarkson, Jose Alvarado, and Miles McBride in the backcourt. Mohamed Diawara, whom New York extended this past offseason, has looked like a strong use of the 51st pick in the 2025 NBA Draft so far, though he did not crack last year’s playoff rotation and shouldn’t be assumed to as a sophomore.

That’s the reality for a contender: opportunities are tight, and there’s little room for developmental misfires. Still, Pate’s arrival gives the Knicks another intriguing young option, and Rose’s front office has shown it can make the most of the limited draft capital it has left.

Knicks Opener Put One Early Rotation Battle In The Spotlight

The Knicks season opener against Philadelphia did more than leave them with an early loss. It also offered a first look at how the back end of the rotation might shake out, and one of the clearest questions coming out of the night centered on Miles McBride. After an uneven offensive showing and a reduced workload, his role is already worth watching as the staff sorts through how many minutes are actually available behind the main pieces.

There are a few other roster wrinkles worth keeping in mind, too. James Wiseman did not play, but the current state of the backup center spot could still create an opening for him if the Knicks decide they need another look there, while Tyler Koleks path to a larger role looks crowded after veteran Jose Alvarado held up well. It is still early, of course, but the opener gave New York a reminder that some of its most interesting decisions this fall may not involve the headline names at all. [Read more 🡒]

Andre Drummond Buzz Is Giving Heat Fans Plenty To Talk About

Andre Drummonds season opener against his former team gave the Knicks a familiar reminder of what he can still do on the glass. He finished with 12 points and 14 rebounds, a solid showing in a game that naturally carried a little extra edge for both sides given his past in New York.

After the game, though, the chatter moved well beyond the box score. A social media account sparked plenty of reaction by alleging Drummond is dating fitness influencer Sophia Zeilstra, and the post quickly caught fire among fans. There has been no verified or public confirmation of that relationship, but the rumor has already become part of the conversation around a night that was supposed to be about basketball. Knicks Have An Early Landry Shamet Decision They Can't Ignore

Landry Shamet got one of the larger reserve guard workloads in the Knicks opener, and the early read was a mixed one. In nearly 25 minutes against Philadelphia, he finished with five points and four assists, but the shot never really came around as he went 2-for-7 from the floor and 1-for-4 from deep in a 106-100 loss.

Even so, the Knicks staff seemed willing to trust him more than the other bench guards, and his passing stood out as a useful part of the night. The question now is whether that playmaking can keep earning him minutes if the jumper stays in the same place, because this is the kind of rotation call that can settle quickly for a team trying to sort out its backcourt early.
