Knicks Star Boldly Speaks Out After Tragedy Shakes Minneapolis

Knicks forward Guerschon Yabusele joins a growing chorus of NBA voices condemning federal violence in Minneapolis, calling for accountability and justice.

The NBA community is once again stepping up and speaking out-this time in response to a pair of fatal shootings in Minneapolis that have sparked national outrage and city-wide protests. As the country processes the deaths of Alex Pretti and Renee Good, reportedly killed by federal agents during an immigration enforcement operation, basketball has taken a backseat to a much larger conversation about justice, accountability, and systemic reform.

Among those using his platform to call for change is New York Knicks forward Guerschon Yabusele. On the team’s off day Monday, Yabusele didn’t hesitate to share his thoughts on social media, voicing his heartbreak and frustration over the events in Minnesota. In a powerful message, he emphasized that while he may be French, silence isn’t an option when human lives are lost under such circumstances.

“I can't stop thinking about the tragic events unfolding in Minnesota, and even though I'm French, I can't remain silent,” Yabusele wrote. “What's happening is beyond comprehension.

We're talking about murders here, these are serious matters. The situation must change, the government must stop operating in this way.

I stand with Minnesota.”

Yabusele’s statement joins a growing chorus of NBA voices calling for justice in the wake of the killings. His teammate, Knicks center Karl-Anthony Towns-who has deep personal ties to Minnesota-has also spoken out, lending his voice to a movement that’s gaining momentum both on and off the court.

The criticism directed at U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has intensified in recent days, with players and coaches across the league weighing in.

Indiana Pacers guard Tyrese Haliburton didn’t mince words, saying plainly, “Alex Pretti was murdered.” That kind of directness speaks volumes, especially coming from a young star who’s quickly becoming one of the league’s most thoughtful and outspoken figures.

Stephen Curry, one of the NBA’s most recognizable and influential players, also made his stance clear-offering his support to the thousands of protestors who braved the freezing Minneapolis temperatures to demand answers and accountability.

Coaches have joined the conversation too. Steve Kerr, known for his willingness to speak on social issues, and Minnesota Timberwolves head coach Chris Finch have both released statements addressing the gravity of the situation. The National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) has also responded publicly, standing in solidarity with the victims’ families and the broader call for reform.

This isn’t the first time NBA players have used their voices in moments of national crisis, and it won’t be the last. What’s happening in Minneapolis has struck a chord throughout the league, and the message from players like Yabusele is clear: basketball doesn’t exist in a vacuum. When injustice happens, silence isn’t an option.
