The Knicks’ missed swing at Yves Missi is looking worse by the day.
New York went after the Pelicans big man hard this summer, with NBA on Prime’s Chris Haynes reporting the Knicks tried “multiple times” to land the third-year pro. That pursuit never got over the line, and now the team is still staring at a glaring need at center with thin options hanging around to fill it.
Missi only sharpened that regret on Thursday. Playing for Cameroon in FIBA World Cup Qualifiers, he put together a loud performance in a 78-62 win over David Fizdale’s Nigeria, finishing with 24 points, nine rebounds, four blocks and one thunderous dunk.

That kind of outing is exactly why New York was so interested in him in the first place. Missi has the upside the Knicks were hunting, and his showing Thursday was a reminder of what they could have added to the roster.
There’s a version of this offseason where the Knicks got a deal done around the draft and moved into free agency with a cleaner plan at backup center. Missi could have been the main reserve behind Karl-Anthony Towns, or he could have paired with a veteran signing made in the opening hours of legal tampering.
Instead, the Knicks were left waiting on the status of Mitchell Robinson and Ariel Hukporti. Once both players unexpectedly moved on, Leon Rose had to scramble and didn’t sign Drummond until several days into free agency, which likely pushed back the third-center search even further.
The failed Missi chase wasn’t on Rose. He was doing the right thing by targeting a young big with upside and limited NBA production, someone who should have been gettable at a price New York could live with.
But New Orleans didn’t budge, and the fallout is still showing up at the end of August.
Without Missi secured, the Knicks have kept looking for answers. They explored a move for his teammate Karlo Matković and even made what amounted to a desperate offer to restricted free agent Moussa Cissé, only to have that offer matched.
Every miss makes the next negotiation tougher, too. Other teams can see how badly Rose wants to solve this spot, which only drives prices up and makes it harder for New York to keep its championship-winning core together while preserving enough draft capital for the trade deadline.
Missing out on Missi before free agency also cost the Knicks valuable time. They lost the chance to get in early and then chase the rest of the market while the center pool was still moving. By the time they agreed to a deal with Drummond on July 3, many of the better-fitting options were already gone.
Nick Richards remained available until he signed with the Heat earlier this week, but he was just one name in the mix, and clearly not one New York valued all that highly.
What’s left now isn’t exactly inspiring. Kelly Olynyk, Dwight Powell, Mason Plumlee and Bismack Biyombo are not the kind of names that change the outlook of a season. Ben Simmons is the one player in that group who could raise the ceiling, but he also comes with the same chance to burn the Knicks.
The bigger point is that New York was right to chase upside. Missi’s performance for Cameroon only underlined that.
The problem is the clock is ticking toward opening night, and the Knicks may wind up settling for an unexciting veteran that the rest of the league already passed over instead of the kind of promising big man who could have changed the picture now and later.
