Roger Goodell found himself in one of the most expensive and visible spots in Madison Square Garden on Knicks Opening Night, taking a courtside seat next to Jon Bon Jovi for New York’s matchup with the Philadelphia 76ers.
The NFL commissioner’s return to MSG came only a few months after he attended one of Bon Jovi’s shows there. This time, the two were back together for a basketball night that also put David Zaslav between them. They were visible during Mike Breen’s speech at the championship ring ceremony.
It was hardly a bargain seat. TickPick’s median get-in price hit an NBA regular season record of $1,894, and plenty of tickets were going for more than $5,000.
Goodell’s presence quickly drew reactions online. One fan wrote, “He's confused why all four quarters are on the streaming service,” in the comments section of Ari Meirov's post on X, formerly Twitter.
Another joked that Goodell was “scouting the Christmas Day schedule.” One more said the commissioner was “spending that player fine money” to land his spot.

The night itself had the polished feel of a celebration before the game turned sour for the home team. The Knicks got their rings and watched the banner go up inside MSG, but the new-look Sixers spoiled the party with a six-point win.
Tyrese Maxey set the tone early and finished with 28 points. Jaylen Brown, who was acquired in the offseason, added 19. LeBron James made his 76ers debut and chipped in 14 points, nine rebounds, and seven assists.
New York never looked fully settled. Jalen Brunson led the way with 21 points, but he needed 19 shots to get there and made only six.
Karl-Anthony Towns provided a late lift with 19 points on 6-for-9 shooting. Andre Drummond, the former 76ers center, gave the Knicks a boost with 12 points and 14 rebounds.

Knicks Just Sent An Early Message About Miles McBride
Miles McBride has been one of the more useful pieces in the Knicks rotation, but the early signs this season have not exactly reinforced his standing. After an uneven preseason and a shaky season opener, his role suddenly feels a little less secure than it did a month ago, which is notable for a player who had become such a steady part of the group.
Decreased playing time would not just be about one rough stretch, either. It can also shape how a team views a players place in its long-term plans, especially when contract status comes into the conversation. For the Knicks, McBrides usage is now worth watching closely, because it may say as much about their future roster thinking as it does about his form right now. [Read more 🡒]
Knicks Young Core Just Got A Timely Boost From A Familiar Name
Dink Pates path back into the pro game has put him right where the Knicks can make use of another young, cost-controlled look. After going undrafted in the 2025 NBA Draft and initially staying clear of an NBA contract to preserve NCAA eligibility at Providence College, Pate was later ruled ineligible for college basketball and headed to the Knicks G-League setup on an Exhibit 10 deal.
For a team working with limited draft assets and a roster that still has holes to sort through, getting a familiar name back in the fold matters. The Knicks have been trying to build out their young core wherever they can find it, and Pates arrival gives them another developmental piece to evaluate without asking for much roster commitment up front. Knicks Ring Ceremony Drama Took An Even Stranger Turn Under Dolan
The Knicks ring ceremony before their game against the 76ers was supposed to be a tidy celebration of last seasons success, with players and coach Mike Brown getting their jewelry before tipoff. But the event quickly turned into one of those odd little team-business stories that can follow a franchise around, because some assistants reportedly were left without their rings, even as the ceremony itself went on in front of the home crowd.
James Dolan then added another layer to the night with a phishing test email sent to employees as part of cybersecurity training, a reminder that the Knicks off-court culture can be just as scrutinized as what happens on the floor. The whole sequence made for a strange backdrop to a pregame celebration, especially with reports that some staff from the Thunder also ran into delays getting their rings. [Read more 🡒]
