There's been a noticeable transformation in Jalen Brunson's approach since the All-Star break, addressing a key issue for the New York Knicks: his chemistry with Karl-Anthony Towns.
When Towns joined from the Minnesota Timberwolves, fans quickly noticed a lack of synergy with Brunson. Coming into this season, their underwhelming partnership was a top concern for Mike Brown. It wasn't something he fixed right away.
Now, as Brunson and Towns start to connect on the court, their partnership isn't flawless, but it's improving thanks to Brunson's shift towards being a playmaker.
Brunson's Playmaking Boosts Towns' Involvement
Post-All-Star break, Brown emphasized the importance of keeping Towns engaged offensively, especially against smaller defenders. This strategy includes more post-ups and ensuring Towns is found for trail threes and pick-and-pop opportunities.
Brunson is playing a crucial role here. While the pick-and-roll isn't heavily used, Brunson is varying his pace around screens, giving Towns chances to dive or pop. He's also increasing entry passes and tracking Towns beyond the arc.
The numbers back up what we’re seeing. Since the All-Star break, 26.2% of Towns’ baskets have been assisted by Brunson, doubling the 12.9% from before. Brunson is passing to Towns more frequently-17.4% of his passes now go to Towns, up from 13.6%.
Knicks Yet to Fully Capitalize on Brunson-KAT Chemistry
While there's room for Brunson and Towns to further develop their chemistry, the progress is promising. However, the Knicks need to leverage this improvement.
Their offensive rating with both stars on the floor since the break is 115.2, down from 119.7 previously. This isn't solely on Brunson and Towns; it reflects inconsistent performances from the starting lineup and streaky shooting.
Mitchell Robinson’s comments on the team’s effort levels highlight ongoing challenges. The Knicks need to start games better prepared.
Despite these bumps, the Knicks have a history of overcoming rough patches. If they can peak as the playoffs approach, with Brunson and Towns leading together, they could be a formidable force.
