The Knicks may not be hunting for a splash, but Bruce Brown has emerged as a clean, practical name to watch as the free-agent market thins out.
With most of the top available players already spoken for, teams looking to add one more piece are dealing with a smaller pool. Brown still stands out, and the Knicks have now been mentioned alongside the Lakers as a possible landing spot.
Brett Seigel of ClutchPoints put it this way: “There’s been some talk about the Lakers wanting Bruce Brown after missing out on Kuminga, but I’m not really sure how much I believe that,” said Brett Seigel of ClutchPoints. “I would cast doubt on the Lakers.
Could they make it happen? Maybe.
But I would look at the Knicks as a realistic option. He could come in and play that Josh Hart-type role for the Knicks.
I think, personally for me, that would be a really good fit.”
That fit makes sense on paper. Brown is a veteran wing available at the veteran’s minimum, and that makes him one of the most attractive names left on the board.
He’s been around the league with the Nuggets, Nets, Pistons, Pacers, and Pelicans, and his most important stop came in Denver, where he helped win the 2023 title. His scoring and overall production have slipped since then, but he still brings the kind of edge contenders want.
For New York, the appeal is pretty straightforward. The Knicks just won their first championship in 53 years, so they’re not in must-fix mode.
Still, the roster could use another boost off the bench after backup center Mitchell Robinson departed. With limited flexibility, they can’t chase much, but Brown gives them a low-cost option who could help right away.
At 30, Brown is still in his athletic prime. He’s 6’4″, which is a little small for the position, but he makes up for it with energy, defense, and basketball smarts. Last season he played all 82 games and averaged 7.9 points, 3.9 rebounds, 2.1 assists, 1.0 steals, and 0.2 blocks per game while shooting 47.5% from the field.
If he landed in New York, Brown wouldn’t be taking Josh Hart’s starting wing job. Instead, he’d be a bench weapon, a sixth-man type who can score in spots and bring real pressure on the perimeter. His ability to handle multiple positions would also give the Knicks more lineup options.
Nothing is settled yet, but Brown looks like the kind of veteran who should have a new deal before long. For a Knicks team with limited room to maneuver, he fits the profile of a final summer addition that carries little downside.
