Ariel Hukporti’s run with the Knicks has hit a murky stretch, and New York has made its stance clear enough by silence. The team did not extend him a qualifying offer on Monday, which means the center is no longer on track to be a restricted free agent.
Hukporti had been in line for that kind of control from the Knicks, but the front office passed on the move that would have kept the situation in its hands. Now his NBA future is uncertain.
The decision is a little surprising on the surface because Hukporti did get into plenty of games last season. He appeared in 54 games in 2025-26 and averaged 2.2 points and 2.9 rebounds per game.
Still, the playoff picture told a different story. When New York tightened its rotation, Hukporti was not part of the mix. Even so, there had been some expectation that he might return for another season.
Instead, the Knicks appear to be looking in another direction as they search for help behind Karl-Anthony Towns. The team may not be able to afford Mitchell Robinson, and while Hukporti was never a lock as a backup center, he did at least represent a possible option.
That doesn’t completely shut the door on a reunion. If Hukporti doesn’t draw much interest elsewhere and the Knicks can bring him back at a low cost, a deal could still happen.
For now, though, New York is moving on and weighing other ways to find a backup big. Robinson was effective for the Knicks, and if he’s not back, they’ll want someone who can fill that spot.
