The Knicks’ search for help in the middle may not be over, and Portland is suddenly a team worth watching.
With a few clubs already turning New York away on the center market, the Knicks have to keep widening the net for a big-man answer. The Trail Blazers have moved onto that radar, especially with Micah Potter looking like a possible cut candidate because of his non-guaranteed deal.
Even if Potter is released this preseason, Portland still has enough bodies up front to create a squeeze. That’s where Branden Carlson enters the picture as a name New York could circle for later in the season.
Carlson just joined the Blazers on a one-year, $2.45 million deal after coming over from the Thunder, and that contract makes him ineligible to be traded until Dec. 15. For the Knicks, that timing could line up neatly with a few months to evaluate their own center situation before deciding whether they need a move as they head toward 2027.
He also checks the kind of box New York has been chasing all offseason: a young big with some upside. Carlson’s rookie numbers were modest - 3.8 points and 1.7 rebounds in 7.7 minutes per game - but he took a step forward last season, putting up 5.8 points and 3.0 rebounds in 11.6 minutes per game. His 2025-26 production translated to a per-36-minute projection of 17.9 points, 9.1 rebounds and 2.0 blocks, which points to a player who could look very different with a real runway.
That runway does not appear to exist in Portland.
The Blazers already have Donovan Clingan in place, brought Robert Williams III back on a three-year deal with $43.5 million guaranteed, and used the No. 16 pick in the 2025 draft on Yang Hansen. With that kind of traffic jam, Carlson is going to have a hard time carving out meaningful minutes.
And because his salary is low and the deal runs only one year, Portland has little reason to treat him like a priority. The Blazers didn’t make a bigger commitment, which leaves his security thin and makes an early breakup easy to imagine. If they think they can get something back before risking a loss for nothing as a restricted free agent next summer, that only strengthens the case for a trade.
That’s where the Knicks could make sense for both sides. Carlson could land in New York as a third center behind the top options, with a chance to be part of a playoff push and maybe earn a real role in the future. Andre Drummond is not locked in beyond this season, so there would be at least a possible opening down the line.
Portland, meanwhile, would get a cleaner fit off its books and some assets in return. Leon Rose has already shown a willingness to pay up when the fit is right, as he did at the deadline last year for Jose Alvarado by sending two second-rounders for a player who might have been a short-term rental. He also has more draft capital to work with after this summer, giving the Blazers something to chase if they decide to move Carlson near the deadline.
There’s even a scenario in which Portland might prefer Pacôme Dadiet or Jordan Clarkson in a deal for Carlson, especially with Shaedon Sharpe’s meniscus injury expected to keep him out for much of the year. Dadiet or Clarkson would give the Blazers wing help, and New York could choose between a developmental piece and a more established veteran depending on what it wants to offer.
None of this guarantees anything. The Knicks could still solve their center issue another way in the coming weeks, whether through a trade or a signing after cuts. Carlson is more of a name to stash in the back pocket than a sure thing.
Still, the setup is there. If New York settles for a less expensive third center to open the season, that could be a sign it plans to make a bigger move later. If that’s the path, Carlson is one of the Blazers’ names worth tracking closely over the next few months.
