The Knicks have been hunting for another center, and the fit with Charlotte is hard to ignore. New York knows the depth behind Karl-Anthony Towns and Andre Drummond is thin enough to become a problem fast if injury strikes, so it has stayed active in trade discussions.
One name that has been circling for a while is Moussa Diabate, but that buzz didn’t turn into a deal, and the Hornets don’t appear eager to move him. Still, there’s another path that makes more sense on both sides: Ryan Kalkbrenner for Tyler Kolek.
Charlotte’s recent Summer League look at Hannes Steinbach has changed the conversation a bit. If the Hornets believe Steinbach is ready to carve out a role, then keeping Kalkbrenner becomes less of a necessity.
Steinbach brings a different kind of game - smoother offensively, comfortable handling the ball, able to facilitate, and willing to take threes when he’s open. That kind of versatility can matter, especially when paired with Diabate.
That’s the real issue for Charlotte: three young centers is a lot to juggle. Kalkbrenner had a very solid rookie season, but if the Hornets can turn that surplus into help elsewhere, it starts to look like a smart use of resources rather than a loss.
And the Hornets do have a clear need at point guard. After trading away franchise star LaMelo Ball this offseason, their depth chart at the position includes Coby White, Christian Anderson Jr., and Tre Mann.
Kolek wouldn’t need to be a star to help that group. He’d just need to give them steadier playmaking, a little scoring, and a bit more experience than the options already on hand.
Mann and Anderson may have more scoring upside, but Mann doesn’t bring the same connective passing, and Anderson is still only 20 years old. Kolek, even with a short career and limited playing time, offers a cleaner fit for what Charlotte needs right now. He can help reduce the ballhandling burden on the perimeter and still play alongside those guys without clogging the backcourt.
He also fits the broader group Charlotte is trying to build around White, Kon Knueppel, Brandon Miller and Naz Reid. That kind of role matters because it gives the Hornets more lineup flexibility without getting in the way of the players they want to develop.
The Knicks, meanwhile, would get exactly what they’re after: another center for the rotation, maybe even a backup, without having to part with a more important piece. New York can dangle Kolek from a place of depth, while Charlotte can address a need without creating a logjam at center.
It’s not a perfect one-for-one on paper, but it’s the kind of deal that lines up cleanly. The Knicks need size.
The Hornets need point guard help. And both teams have enough reason to think this swap would solve something real.
