Knicks Could See A Very Different Bulls Frontcourt Tonight

As Nic Claxton nears a potential debut with the Chicago Bulls, his status remains a pivotal factor in the team's strategy for their matchup against the New York Knicks.

Nic Claxton’s path back to the floor has been moving in the right direction, and now the Bulls have taken another step that puts his debut within reach.

The offseason addition from the Brooklyn Nets has been out since the early part of training camp with a hamstring strain. He didn’t get back into full practice with his new teammates until November 1, but he came through that session without any setbacks. After that, Chicago bumped him up to doubtful for Monday night’s game against the Philadelphia 76ers.

Now, with a trip to Madison Square Garden on deck, the Bulls have upgraded him again. Claxton is listed as questionable, which means his first appearance in a Bulls uniform could come in just a matter of hours.

That update comes even though Tiago Splitter sounded cautious earlier in the week. On November 2, after Claxton was back on the court in practice, the head coach said, “he’s still not ready” and that the staff is taking it “day by day.”

So there’s still a real chance Chicago keeps him out a little longer. The Bulls also have a rare three full days off after this one before their next game Sunday afternoon at home, which gives them some breathing room if they want to be patient.

But that same break could also work in favor of getting Claxton some live action now. If he does play, it would almost certainly come with a tight minutes restriction. Even so, it would give the projected starting center a chance to ease in before getting more recovery time.

His return would matter, too. Chicago’s defense was at its best of the season in the first meeting with the Knicks a week ago.

The champs still finished strong late, but the Bulls held New York to 18-41 shooting in the restricted area. Replicating that kind of effort in Madison Square Garden is a tall order, but Claxton gives them another tool to try.

Rebounding was another issue in that matchup. The Bulls lost that battle 50-39 and gave up 23 second-chance points. Claxton hasn’t been a huge rebound producer over the last couple of years, but he does add another big, mobile body who can help on the glass and fight for contested boards.

There’s also another frontcourt note on the injury report: Jalen Smith remains probable with his finger injury. He played against the 76ers and posted 13 points, 7 rebounds, and 4 assists. With Smith performing well despite the team’s rough stretch, Splitter may have a tricky minutes puzzle to sort out once Claxton is cleared.

Knicks Suddenly Have A Trade Opening They Cant Ignore At Center

The Knicks search for another reliable center has become one of the more obvious roster questions hanging over their early season, and the market may be starting to give them a path. Milwaukees rough start has raised the possibility that the Bucks could eventually shift into seller mode, which is the kind of development front offices watch closely when they need depth behind the starter and do not want to pay a premium for it.

Kelel Ware would be the more intriguing name in that conversation, but moving him would not necessarily fit Milwaukees longer-term thinking if it still views him as part of a rebuild. Jericho Sims, meanwhile, looks like the cleaner fit for New York: a familiar, lower-cost option who could help stabilize the backup center spot without forcing the Knicks into a bigger swing than they need right now. No deal is done yet, but the opening is there, and it is the sort of one New York cannot really ignore. [Read more 🡒]

Knicks Could Face A Starting Lineup Decision Fans Will Debate

Josh Harts status is suddenly one of the more interesting pregame notes for the Knicks as they get ready to face the Bulls, with the wing listed questionable because of ankle soreness. Hart has become a familiar part of New Yorks starting mix, so even a routine injury designation can ripple through the rotation and force the coaching staff to rethink how it wants to open the game.

If Hart cannot go, the Knicks would have a few different ways to patch the lineup, and each comes with its own tradeoff. Jordan Clarkson, Landry Shamet and Miles McBride are all part of the conversation, giving the staff options depending on whether it wants more scoring, more spacing or more ball pressure, while Chicago is dealing with a similar uncertainty of its own as Nic Claxton also sits questionable with a left hamstring strain. Knicks Face An Awkward Post-Title Fight Nobody Wanted

The Knicks 2026 championship celebration has run into a familiar kind of off-court complication, with the White House visit now hanging over the team almost as much as the title itself. Owner James Dolan accepted the invitation for the Knicks to go after the championship, but the trip has already become a point of discomfort for some players, adding an awkward political edge to what should have been a straightforward victory lap.

Spike Lee has already weighed in, saying he hopes the players are not forced to make the visit. For a franchise that finally reached the top, the last thing anyone wanted was a debate over whether the champions should show up at all, but that is where the conversation now sits as the teams post-title plans remain unsettled.
