Jalen Brunson’s contract has become one of the loudest bargains in the NBA, and the latest Cason Wallace extension buzz only sharpens that point.
According to Michael Scotto of HoopsHype, Wallace could land a deal in the neighborhood of Christian Braun, Jalen Suggs and Dyson Daniels. Among that group, Suggs is set to make the most next season at $32.4 million, a figure that sits about $5 million below Brunson’s number.
That’s the part that jumps off the page. If Wallace gets there, he’d be earning close to Brunson money while functioning as a fourth option on a championship-caliber team.
Brunson, meanwhile, was the best player on the New York Knicks’ first championship team in 53 years. The contrast makes his pay cut look even more extreme.
Wallace is a valuable player, and the reported price tag fits the way the league pays top-tier role players now. He earned All-Defensive recognition last year and had plenty of success in Game 7 of the Western Conference finals, including on offense.
That’s the market. High-end role players get paid, and the Knicks know it as well as anyone. New York has spent heavily to keep its supporting cast in place, handing out the money needed to retain Karl-Anthony Towns, OG Anunoby, Mikal Bridges and Josh Hart.
Because Brunson took that massive discount, the Knicks were able to build around him that way. Even now, despite being the team’s best player, he ranks only third on the roster in salary.
So while Wallace’s potential deal would be justified on its own, it also serves as another reminder of just how unusual Brunson’s sacrifice was. He’s making the kind of money usually reserved for elite role players, even though he’s one of the best players in the league.
And that’s why his pay cut keeps looking bigger every time another contract gets handed out.
