The Lakers are still hunting for help, but the free-agent board may be tilting away from Los Angeles and toward New York.
Even with training camp approaching and the roster already sitting one player over the league limit, the Lakers have kept working the phones in search of upgrades. Trade talks have gone nowhere so far, so the front office has also been poking around the free-agent market for another veteran piece. Bruce Brown has been one of the names linked to that search.
“The Cavaliers, Heat and Lakers have recently expressed free agent interest in Bruce Brown. Now one of the best available unrestricted free agents, the versatile guard could help complete a title-contending rotation,” NBA reporter Evan Sidery wrote.
Brown has been viewed as a possible fit in Los Angeles for a while now. At one point, he was expected to land with the Lakers before choosing to return to the Denver Nuggets instead, and the team has reportedly stayed on him over the past several weeks.
“I think he’s in the mix for the Lakers, a team that has had some interest in him for several years now,” Bleacher Report’s Jake Fischer said.
But that picture has started to blur. A new update suggests the Knicks may have a stronger shot at landing him, and that could leave the Lakers on the outside looking in again.
“There’s been some talk about the Lakers wanting Bruce Brown after missing out on Kuminga, but I’m not really sure how much I believe that,” Siegel said. “I would cast doubt on the Lakers.
Could they make it happen? Maybe.
But I would look at the Knicks as a realistic option. He could come in and play that Josh Hart-type role for the Knicks,” Siegel said.
“I think, personally for me, that would be a really good fit.”
For the Lakers, that would be a tough miss. Brown would bring another dependable veteran alongside Luka Doncic or Austin Reaves, and his value has always come from doing the unglamorous stuff a contender needs. He’s the kind of player who can slide into whatever role a team asks of him.
Brown has made $63 million in contracts throughout his career. After losing Jonathan Kuminga in a free-agency battle recently, the Lakers could use a win here. Instead, the latest read on the situation points to New York gaining momentum.
