Rex Ryan didn’t hold back after the Jets’ loss to the Lions, and Olu Fashanu took the brunt of it.
During an ESPN Radio appearance on Monday, Ryan zeroed in on the Jets left tackle after Sunday’s rough outing in Detroit. “What the hell is wrong with you?”
Ryan vented. “A top-10 pick, how about you get a little fire in your butt and block some of these average-ass defensive ends that are making you look bad?
That is my biggest disappointment with this football team.”
Fashanu, the No. 11 pick in 2024, was charged with three sacks allowed and six quarterback pressures in the game. Detroit also declined a holding penalty against the third-year lineman.
Ryan’s comments landed with extra force because of his family connection to the Jets. His son, Seth Ryan, is the team’s passing game coordinator, which means the two are likely in the same offensive meetings and film sessions. Even though DiPietro & Rothenberg doesn’t air nationally, the criticism has the kind of juice that can spread quickly in the social media era.
That said, Ryan didn’t spend the entire interview unloading. He also praised the Jets’ young core and spoke glowingly about Geno Smith, continuing a relationship that has been revived after a long feud.
Still, the headline was Ryan going after Fashanu, and not softening the blow because of his son’s role with the team. The article’s point was simple: if a player can’t handle a Super Bowl-winning assistant and former defensive coordinator coming at him, that’s on the player.
As of publication, neither Fashanu nor Seth Ryan had publicly responded. Seth likely won’t be asked often, either, since non-coordinators usually aren’t regularly made available to the media during the season.
Even so, this is the territory the Jets signed up for when they brought in Seth Ryan, and the same goes for the Chargers and Lions before them. Rex Ryan has spent almost his entire life around the NFL, and when he has an opinion, he usually says it straight.
That could make the next few days interesting. At some point, a Jets reporter is likely to ask Fashanu about the criticism, and that has the potential to get uncomfortable in a hurry.
