As the dust settles from the frenzy of NFL free agency, the New York Jets have addressed many of their offseason challenges. Yet, one crucial question lingers: who will back up Geno Smith at quarterback?
The Jets had their eyes on Andy Dalton and Carson Wentz, both with ties to offensive coordinator Frank Reich. But with Dalton now in Philadelphia, the spotlight turns to trade discussions involving Tanner McKee.
However, the Jets might be wise to steer clear of these talks.
Understanding the Eagles’ demands
In a recent chat on ESPN New York’s “Saturday Huddle,” veteran Jets reporter Rich Cimini shared that New York explored trades for McKee, Davis Mills, and Mac Jones. The sticking point? The steep asking prices-teams were seeking second-round picks.
While McKee, Davis, and Jones offer intriguing potential, none justify a second-round pick, especially McKee. A 2023 sixth-round pick, McKee has shown promise in preseason but has only two regular-season starts under his belt.
Those came in the final weeks of the 2024 and 2025 seasons against backup-laden defenses, where he led the Eagles to a 1-1 record. His stats?
A 59.2% completion rate, 510 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception.
It all circles back to the cost. If the Eagles were open to a Day 3 pick, the Jets might consider taking a chance. But surrendering a second-rounder would be unwise.
With four picks in the top 45 of this year’s draft, including two in the top 16, the Jets have valuable assets. Trading one for a quarterback with McKee’s limited experience isn’t prudent.
Instead, the Jets could pursue a seasoned, cost-effective QB2 or explore the draft’s later rounds for a prospect like Penn State’s Drew Allar. They might even do both, ensuring they bolster their quarterback depth without sacrificing precious draft capital.
