NY Jets Eyeing Chicago's Backup QB as Free Agency Begins

As the New York Jets search for a quarterback solution for the 2026 season, attention turns to Chicago's promising backup Tyson Bagent amid growing league interest.

The New York Jets are on the hunt for a quarterback for the 2026 season, and they’re leaving no stone unturned, including the trade market. As free agency looms, one name that’s quietly gaining traction is Chicago Bears backup quarterback Tyson Bagent.

During the NFL Scouting Combine, Bears GM Ryan Poles revealed that Bagent has attracted interest from multiple teams, with Chicago receiving several inquiries about the 25-year-old. While it’s unclear if the Jets are among those teams, their need for a quarterback makes it a plausible scenario.

Bagent’s journey began as an undrafted free agent from Shepherd University in 2023. Over three seasons with the Bears, he’s played in 12 games, leading the team to a 2-2 record in his four rookie season starts. His career stats include a 66.4% completion rate for 917 yards, three touchdowns, and six interceptions, along with 109 rushing yards and two touchdowns.

The 2025 preseason was a standout period for Bagent, where he completed 66.7% of his passes for 511 yards, five touchdowns, and one interception. Bears head coach Ben Johnson praised Bagent, expressing his belief that Bagent is among the top 32 quarterbacks in the NFL and deserves a starting opportunity.

Despite Johnson’s reluctance to part with Bagent, he acknowledged that the team must prioritize its best interests. With Caleb Williams firmly established as Chicago’s starter, Bagent finds himself in a backup role similar to Tanner McKee’s with the Eagles.

At just 25, Bagent’s potential remains largely untapped, and his cost-effectiveness adds to his appeal. His two-year, $10 million extension with the Bears results in a manageable $4.2 million cap hit for any team that acquires him for the 2026 season.

Bagent’s situation makes him an intriguing option for teams seeking a bridge quarterback. With interest already building, the Jets could very well consider him as a viable candidate to fill that role.
