The NFL is reviewing a missed facemask call involving Cam Skattebo after the Giants running back was left bloodied on Sunday night against the Cowboys.
The play came on New York’s second offensive possession, on a critical third down. Skattebo took the handoff at his own 44-yard line and was stopped for no gain.
He sprang up angry and started shouting directly at the nearby referee, convinced his helmet had been yanked. Replay backed him up, showing Dallas Cowboys defensive tackle Quinnen Williams grabbing and twisting Skattebo’s helmet.
The result was hard to miss: Skattebo had a visibly bloodied nose and had to leave the game briefly. Even with that evidence, no flag came out.
The missed call forced the Giants to punt, and Dallas answered on the next possession to tie the game at 7-7.
While the officials did not penalize the play, the league still can discipline Williams. According to the league’s website, players can be fined $11,941 for a first face mask offense and $17,911 for a second offense.
Skattebo’s night was still a major one for New York. In his first official game back from injury, the second-year back delivered a bruising performance against Dallas. He finished with a game-high 81 rushing yards and opened the scoring for the Giants by powering in a 3-yard touchdown on the opening drive.
He punctuated that score with a backflip in the end zone.
That physical edge helped set the tone for New York’s 28-20 divisional win.
