Jets CB Kris Boyd Still Recovering After Midtown Shooting; Suspect Arrested Following Failed Getaway Attempt
New York Jets cornerback Kris Boyd is still battling complications from a gunshot wound sustained last month in a late-night shooting outside a Manhattan restaurant. The 29-year-old defensive back was critically injured in the November 16 incident, and the alleged shooter, 20-year-old Frederick Green, is now facing multiple felony charges following a failed attempt to flee law enforcement.
According to prosecutors, the shooting unfolded outside Sei Less, a well-known Asian-fusion restaurant and celebrity hotspot on West 38th Street. Boyd had been out with a teammate when a group began heckling them over their flashy attire. The situation escalated outside the venue, where prosecutors say Green opened fire.
The attack left Boyd with a bullet wound that pierced a vein and lodged fragments into his pulmonary artery and lung - a serious injury that has required multiple hospital visits since. He remains in recovery, with his long-term status still uncertain.
Surveillance footage reportedly captured the entire confrontation, with Green allegedly unmasked throughout the incident. Prosecutors say he fled the scene in a white BMW and eventually made his way to Buffalo, where he attempted to lay low at an apartment belonging to a female acquaintance.
But Green's efforts to avoid capture didn’t end there. Authorities allege he cut off a significant amount of his hair, changed phones, and deactivated his social media accounts in a bid to obscure his identity. Despite those efforts, investigators were able to track a gray Mercedes registered to his girlfriend, ultimately leading them to the Buffalo apartment.
When officers arrived, Green allegedly made a last-ditch effort to escape by attempting to jump out of a window, but he was quickly taken into custody.
Green has now been arraigned in Manhattan on charges including attempted murder, assault, and weapons possession. His criminal history includes four prior arrests - among them, charges for possessing someone else’s ID and criminal possession of a controlled substance. As a juvenile, he also faced charges for reckless endangerment and robbery, the latter from a sealed 2018 case.
As for Boyd, the former Minnesota Viking and Arizona Cardinal had only recently joined the Jets after a stint in Houston. Known for his physicality and special teams prowess, Boyd had been working to carve out a role in New York’s secondary. Now, his focus has shifted entirely to recovery.
It’s a devastating turn for a player who was looking to make his mark in a new city - and a sobering reminder of how quickly things can change, even for NFL athletes. The Jets organization has not released an official update on Boyd’s condition, but the hope remains that he’ll be able to make a full recovery and eventually return to the field.
