New York Jets Eye Veteran QB Option After Trading Justin Fields

The New York Jets are actively pursuing a seasoned backup quarterback to support Geno Smith, after trading Justin Fields, with various veteran options still on the table.

The New York Jets have been busy this offseason, making significant moves at the quarterback position. Trading away Justin Fields was a necessary step after a challenging season, and they've now brought in Geno Smith to lead the charge.

However, the Jets aren't done yet. They need to secure a reliable backup for Smith, and that's where things get interesting.

According to ESPN’s Rich Cimini, the Jets are exploring veteran quarterback options, having missed out on a few earlier targets. With the focus now on finding a seasoned backup, the Jets have several paths they could take, including getting creative with the draft.

Cimini provides insight into the Jets' current situation:

“Backup plan: The Fields trade means the Jets need a veteran backup for Smith. Carson Wentz and Andy Dalton, both linked to the opening because of their ties to new offensive coordinator Frank Reich, are now off the board. Wentz re-signed with the Minnesota Vikings; Dalton was traded to the Philadelphia Eagles.

“The options are dwindling. One of them is re-signing Tyrod Taylor.

He'd work well with Smith -- they have a good relationship -- but the concern with Taylor, 36, is that he's injury prone. Another option is Cooper Rush, 32, cut recently by the Baltimore Ravens.

Other free agents include Joe Flacco and Russell Wilson. You can never rule out a trade -- Mougey has made 12 player trades since last year -- but the asking prices remain high,” he wrote.

While missing out on Carson Wentz and Andy Dalton might seem like a setback, it's worth noting their extensive experience in the league. Although they might not be game-changers for the Jets, their veteran presence could have added value over many younger options currently available.

The Jets have a crucial decision to make as they look to solidify their quarterback room. Whether they opt for a seasoned veteran or take a chance in the draft, the next move will be pivotal in shaping their upcoming season.
