The New York Jets are in the spotlight as they navigate their quarterback options for the upcoming draft. With names like Drew Allar from Penn State and Alabama's Ty Simpson making the rounds, there's a new contender in the mix: Miami's Carson Beck.
Jets Eye Carson Beck
ESPN's Rich Cimini reports that Jets GM Darren Mougey is set to meet with Carson Beck ahead of his pro-day workout. Beck is gaining traction, with ESPN's Jordan Reid suggesting he's a strong candidate to be the third quarterback picked in April. Reid pegs Beck as a likely third-round selection.
Earlier, ESPN's Mel Kiper Jr. had the Jets targeting Simpson with the 16th overall pick. However, there's buzz that Simpson might slide into the second round, with the Cleveland Browns showing interest. Yet, it's uncertain if their interest is strong enough to prevent the Jets from swooping in.
Why Beck Over Simpson?
Simpson's limited 15 college starts could be a factor in the Jets' decision-making. Cimini points out that quarterbacks with fewer than 17 college starts have had mixed success in the NFL. The list includes names like Jake Locker and Mitchell Trubisky, with Cam Newton being the notable exception.
Carson Beck, on the other hand, brings more experience to the table. He started 16 games at Miami last season and previously logged 27 starts with the Georgia Bulldogs.
As Geno Smith looks to lead the Jets on a potential playoff run, the team is also planning for the future. Drafting Beck and allowing him to develop behind Smith could set the Jets up for long-term success, even if the immediate future remains uncertain.
