Jets Sign QB Adrian Martinez to Practice Squad as Week 15 Quarterback Situation Remains Murky
The New York Jets added a familiar face to the quarterback room this week, signing Adrian Martinez to the practice squad. Martinez, who was with the team during training camp before being cut ahead of the regular season, is back in green after a short stint on the 49ers' practice squad that ended earlier this week.
The timing of the move is telling. With both Justin Fields and Tyrod Taylor dealing with injuries, the Jets appear to be bracing for the possibility that neither will be available for Sunday’s matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars. That scenario would leave rookie Brady Cook and Martinez as the team’s two active quarterbacks - a situation that, frankly, underscores just how turbulent this season has been under center for Gang Green.
Let’s be clear: if the Jets are forced to roll into Week 15 with Cook and Martinez as their quarterback tandem, they’ll be facing an uphill battle. Cook, a young signal-caller still finding his footing at the pro level, could be in line for his first NFL start.
Martinez, while athletic and experienced from his college days, remains untested in regular-season NFL action. It’s not exactly the veteran depth chart you want when facing a Jaguars team still in the playoff hunt.
This is yet another chapter in a quarterback saga that’s defined the Jets’ 2025 campaign. Injuries, inconsistency, and a carousel of signal-callers have made it nearly impossible for the offense to find rhythm. And now, as they prepare to host Jacksonville, the Jets may be down to options that weren’t even on the 53-man roster a week ago.
Still, Head Coach Aaron Glenn has maintained that the team will have its “bases covered” at quarterback this week. Whether that means a last-minute return from Fields or Taylor, or simply a full vote of confidence in Cook and Martinez, remains to be seen.
The Jets also made a few other roster moves this week, including signing defensive lineman Eric Watts to the active roster and placing DL Tyler Baron on injured reserve. On the injury front, questions still linger around running back Breece Hall and wide receiver Garrett Wilson, both of whom are dealing with nagging issues that could impact their availability in Week 15.
As the Jets prepare for a tough test against the Jaguars, all eyes will be on the quarterback room - and whether there’s any late-week clarity. If not, Cook and Martinez may be called upon to lead the charge. It’s a tall task, but in a season full of unexpected turns, it wouldn’t be the first time the Jets have had to improvise.
