The Jets are running thin at wide receiver fast, and Sunday’s game against the Lions may force Aaron Glenn to dip into the practice squad for help.
New York’s receiver room has been battered by injuries. Tim Patrick is on injured reserve with a groin injury, first-round rookie Omar Cooper Jr. is still on IR while recovering from a high-ankle sprain, and Arian Smith is out for the season. On top of that, Adonai Mitchell - the team’s second-leading receiver behind Garrett Wilson - has been limited in practice the last two days because of a finger injury.
That leaves Wilson, return specialist Isaiah Williams, and recent practice squad addition Malik McClain as the only three fully healthy receivers on the 53-man roster right now.
Glenn said Friday, via ESPN’s Rich Cimini, that the Jets plan to elevate a wide receiver from the practice squad for Sunday, but he wouldn’t reveal which one.
The two names in the mix are Sterling Shepard and Tyler Johnson, both of whom were added to the practice squad after Cooper landed on injured reserve last week. Neither was ready to go for New York’s Week 2 matchup with the Green Bay Packers, but one of them is now in line for his 2026 debut.
Shepard brings the steadier track record. The 10-year NFL veteran and longtime New York Giants fan favorite turned in a solid year with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last season, catching 39 passes for 371 yards and a touchdown. The drawback is simple: he’s still getting familiar with the Jets and their coaching staff.
Johnson has the opposite profile. He hasn’t matched Shepard’s career production, but he does have the advantage of having been with the Jets last season. The coaching staff isn’t exactly the same, but he should at least have some existing rapport with Glenn.
There’s no bad answer here for New York. The Jets mostly need another healthy body for a short-handed Sunday roster. If they’re choosing on upside and recent production, Shepard looks like the stronger option.

Jets Face A Kicker Decision They Cant Delay Much Longer
The Jets have spent the opening stretch of the 2026 season trying to play it both ways at kicker, alternating between Blake Grupe and Jason Sanders while waiting for one of them to separate. Sanders, who is on the practice squad, has already been elevated three times and is expected to handle the job again in Week 3 against the Detroit Lions, giving New York one more look before it has to make a cleaner call.
After Sunday, the decision gets harder to avoid. NFL rules limit practice squad elevations, so the Jets will need to either sign Sanders to the active roster or stick with Grupe and move forward without the weekly flexibility they have leaned on so far. For a team trying to steady a position that can swing games in a hurry, the clock on this one is already running down. [Read more 🡒]
Jets Pass Rush Has A Real Chance To Rattle Detroit
The Jets edge group is heading into a matchup that could shape the night against Detroit, with rookie David Bailey set to be part of a rotation that has quietly given New York a chance to pressure quarterbacks all season. Bailey has already flashed real pass-rushing ability, and the larger challenge for the Jets is turning that into a steady problem for a Lions offense that will be sorting out its tackles as the game unfolds.
Bailey figures to see one of two familiar-looking tests on the edge, either Blake Miller coming back from injury or Larry Borom after a rough recent outing, while Kingsley Enagbare and Will McDonald should also be in the mix. For a Jets defense looking to make an impact early, this is the kind of matchup where one strong stretch from the front can tilt the whole game plan. [Read more 🡒]
Jets Have One Obvious Week 3 Answer They Need To Embrace
Garrett Wilson has already shown through the first two weeks why he has to stay central to the Jets plan, but his role has not been consistent from one game to the next. After looking like the kind of receiver who can tilt a game in Week 1, he was less involved in Week 2, and that uneven usage stands out even more with Detroit coming to town. The Lions have not been stout on defense, and their secondary has been hit hard by injuries, which gives the Jets a clear opening if they want to keep the offense moving.
For New York, the cleanest path in Week 3 is to lean into the matchup and keep putting the ball in Wilsons hands early and often. Detroits defensive issues should make him a focal point of the game plan, especially with the Lions vulnerable on the back end. The Jets do not need to get fancy here, and the evidence so far points in one direction: get Wilson involved, and make the Lions prove they can slow him down. [Read more 🡒]
