Jets Win Still Left Fans Debating Geno Smith And Garrett Wilson

Despite struggles with penalties and player performances, the Jets clinched their first win in weeks, offering a vital boost for the team and coach.

The Jets needed a win in the worst way, and they got one Sunday at MetLife Stadium, even if it came wrapped in all the mess that has defined their recent stretch. After three straight losses, Aaron Glenn’s team finally found enough answers to get back in the win column for the first time since Week 1.

It wasn’t clean. It wasn’t smooth. But it was enough.

Garrett Wilson set the tone early, David Bailey delivered the kind of breakout performance the Jets have been waiting for, and New York survived a sloppy afternoon to edge the Browns. Geno Smith, though, remained a concern, and the penalty issues that have dogged this team didn’t magically disappear.

Garrett Wilson was the easiest part of the game plan to understand. After being underused against the Chicago Bears in Week 4, Frank Reich made sure the Jets got the ball to their top target on the opening drive.

Wilson responded with three catches for 70 yards, capped by the first score of the day. He didn’t catch another pass in the first half, but the Jets kept finding ways to feature him late.

By the end of the day, he had seven receptions for 104 yards, giving him his second 100-yard game of the season.

The other big storyline came from the defensive side, where David Bailey finally looked like the player the Jets expected when they took him No. 2 overall. After disappearing over the last two games against the Detroit Lions and Bears, Bailey erupted against the Browns.

He finished with three sacks, which set a single-game franchise rookie record, along with three tackles for loss and four quarterback hits. Deshaun Watson felt his presence throughout the game.

The Jets also did themselves no favors with the flags. After piling up 12 penalties for 76 yards in Chicago, including three that erased would-be interceptions, they were sloppy again on Sunday. New York was flagged 10 times for 102 yards, a steady stream of self-inflicted damage that nearly made things much harder than they needed to be.

Geno Smith’s recent slide remains impossible to ignore. Through the first three games, he had looked like a stabilizing force and even put together a record-breaking performance against the Lions.

Over the last two weeks, though, the wheels have come off. The offensive line didn’t help, but Smith still endured another rough outing, finishing 17 of 30 for 182 yards in a game that looked better in the box score than it did on the field.

Then there was Quincy Williams, who made his return feel personal. The former Jets linebacker said before the game that he planned to make life miserable for his old team, and he backed it up.

Williams led the Browns with 11 tackles and added a pass breakup, a tackle for loss, and three forced fumbles. His hits were punishing, including one on Kenyon Sadiq in the red zone.

The Jets got what they needed most: a win. But Sunday also left the same familiar reminders about how much still needs cleaning up.

Jets Face Another Injury Test As One Late Decision Looms

Another week, another test of depth for a Jets roster that has spent much of the early season juggling injuries. New York and Cleveland released their inactive lists for Sundays Week 5 matchup, and the Jets will be without Breece Hall, Adonai Mitchell, Dylan Parham, Kiko Mauigoa, Nahshon Wright and Nate Lynn, a collection of absences that trims options on offense, along the line and on defense as the team tries to stay afloat.

The bigger late twist centers on Will McDonald, who was limited on Friday and remains a game-time decision. With several players already unavailable and a few other statuses still being monitored closer to kickoff, the Jets are once again waiting until the last possible moment to see how much of their pass-rush plan will be intact against a Browns team dealing with its own injury issues. Former Jet Quincy Williams Just Made Week 5 Personal

Quincy Williams is already turning a routine Week 5 meeting into something with a little more edge. After leaving the Jets in free agency, the former linebacker settled in with the Browns on a new deal and has looked sharper in his new home, even if coverage remains the area that still gets exposed at times. From New Yorks side, this is one of those familiar reminders that a player who once helped anchor the middle of the defense can quickly become a problem on the other sideline.

Williams has made it clear the matchup carries extra meaning for him, too. The Jets did not bring him back, and he has embraced the chance to make them pay for it when the teams line up in Week 5. It adds a little more heat to a game that already has enough of it, and it puts one more former Jet in the spotlight with something to prove. [Read more 🡒]

Browns Rookie WR Took A Scary Hit At The Worst Time

A physical afternoon against Cleveland took an uncomfortable turn when Jets safety Minkah Fitzpatrick was penalized on the same drive for a facemask before a helmet-to-helmet shot sent Browns rookie receiver KC Concepcion to the sideline. The hit drew immediate attention because it came in the middle of an already chippy sequence, adding another layer to a game that had no shortage of contact.

Concepcion did not return after the injury, and the Browns now have to wait on his status as he goes through concussion protocol ahead of the next matchup. For the Jets, it was the sort of play that can linger well beyond the down itself, especially when a defensive drive already included more than one penalty. [Read more 🡒]
