The Jets got a scare in their preseason finale Friday night when running back Chip Trayanum was taken to a hospital after suffering a neck injury against the Giants.
Trayanum, an undrafted free agent who arrived after six years in college, has been trying to carve out a role in New York’s rushing attack ahead of his first NFL season. He had flashed enough in camp and preseason action to earn a spot on the roster for the finale, and he even gave the Jets their only touchdown of the night in the first quarter.
Then came the injury at halftime, when team officials escorted him to the hospital.
According to league insider Adam Schefter, there was at least some encouraging news about Trayanum’s condition.
“Jets say RB Chip Trayanum is on the way to the hospital due to a neck injury. He is awake, alert and has movement of his extremities,” Schefter wrote.
Before the injury, Trayanum had been New York’s most productive runner in the game. He finished with 12 carries for 37 yards and the touchdown, and he also added two catches for 25 yards. Cam Camper and Connor Hulstein combined for five receptions and 47 yards.
The Jets couldn’t build on Trayanum’s early score, and the Giants took over from there. New York was shut out the rest of the way in a 23-6 loss, closing the preseason at 1-2.
The Jets now turn toward the regular season, where they’ll try to rebound from their 3-14 record from 2025 and snap a 15-year playoff drought. They’re also looking to end a 23-year AFC East title drought and erase 10 straight losing seasons.
Their opener comes on the road against the Tennessee Titans on Sept. 13 at 1 p.m. ET.
