Jets Trade Idea Targets A Fix For Their Biggest Defensive Hole

With hopes of strengthening their defense and eyeing long-term success, the New York Jets consider a strategic trade for Buccaneers' linebacker SirVocea Dennis.

The New York Jets could be looking for another piece on defense, and one trade idea has them targeting Tampa Bay Buccaneers linebacker SirVocea Dennis.

In the proposal from Moton, the Jets would send a late 2027 pick to Tampa Bay in exchange for Dennis. The logic is straightforward: New York has a veteran in Demario Davis, but the long-term picture at linebacker still needs attention.

“At 37, Demario Davis is a starting-caliber linebacker on a two-year deal," Moton wrote. "The Jets must consider the future at the position-someone to pair alongside Jamien Sherwood.

Gang Green may be able to bring in Dennis for a late-round pick. He could be the odd man out after the Buccaneers overhauled their linebacker group.

As a first-time, full-time starter last year, he logged 101 tackles (10 for loss) and three sacks. The 26-year-old needs to sharpen his coverage technique, but he still has some upside."

Dennis spent last season with Tampa Bay and finished with three sacks, 66 solo tackles, 10 tackles for loss and seven QB hits in 16 games. He has been in the league since 2023 and has totaled four sacks, 91 solo tackles, 11 tackles for loss and eight QB hits in his NFL career.

The idea comes as the Jets try to move forward from a brutal 3-14 season in Year 1 of the Aaron Glenn era. New York became the first team in NFL history to go through a season without a defensive interception and to lose five straight games by 23 or more points.

Glenn is set to handle defensive play-calling next season, leaving the Jets to find out whether that change actually lifts the unit. The expectation, at least for now, is that the team still may miss the playoffs. Even so, the roster looks far better than it did a year ago after a strong draft and offseason.

In the 2026 draft, the Jets added David Bailey, Kenyon Sadiq, Omar Cooper Jr., D'Angelo Ponds, Darrell Jackson Jr., Cade Klubnik, Anez Cooper and VJ Payne.

Before that, they made several notable moves, bringing in Geno Smith from the Las Vegas Raiders, Minkah Fitzpatrick from the Miami Dolphins and T'Vondre Sweat from the Tennessee Titans. They also signed Demario Davis and Tim Patrick in free agency.

Looking ahead to Year 2 of the Glenn era, the Jets’ schedule includes the Titans, Green Bay Packers, Detroit Lions, Chicago Bears, Cleveland Browns, New England Patriots, Dolphins, Raiders, Kansas City Chiefs, Buffalo Bills, Los Angeles Chargers, Denver Broncos, Arizona Cardinals and Minnesota Vikings.

Jets Fans Have A New Geno Smith Problem Before Camp

Geno Smith is back in the news for reasons the Jets would rather not have attached to their quarterback room heading into camp. A July 6 traffic stop in Florida led to a speeding citation and a separate issue for failing to produce his drivers license, adding another off-field distraction to a summer already heavy with questions around him.

The larger concern is the broader pattern now hanging over Smith, with the NFL and the Jets both acknowledging the situation but declining to say much more. Smith has not been charged with any crime, but the combination of the traffic stop and the ongoing police attention ensures this is not the kind of background noise a team wants following its players into training camp. Jets Still Have One Defensive Weak Spot They Cannot Ignore

The Jets have spent plenty of time trying to shore up the edges of their defense, but linebacker remains the spot that still looks vulnerable as the roster takes shape. Age and the possibility of regression among the current group have pushed the team toward a familiar offseason exercise, weighing whether a veteran addition could stabilize the room and give the defense a little more insurance.

Among the names that fit that discussion are Jerome Baker, Matt Milano and Elandon Roberts, each offering a different kind of depth and experience. Bobby Okereke is also in the mix as a theoretical target, though the fit is less straightforward if he is not inclined to step into a backup role, and Milanos upside comes with the obvious caveat that health has been a recurring issue. Demario Davis Just Gave Jets Fans A Familiar Reason To Worry

Demario Davis is back in the building for a third stint with the Jets, and even before he takes a snap, he is already part of the conversation around what this version of the team is supposed to look like. A five-time All-Pro, Davis comes in with the kind of rsum that carries instant respect, and he also arrives off a season in which he piled up a career-high 143 combined tackles, along with three passes defended and two forced fumbles.

For the Jets, the appeal goes beyond what Davis still does on Sundays. He has made it clear that his role is tied to the standard the organization wants to set, the sort of presence that can shape a locker room as much as a defense. That makes his return feel bigger than a reunion, because if he is being asked to help define the culture again, the expectations around what comes next are already pretty high. [Read more 🡒]
