Jets Trade Deadline Talk Just Raised A Bigger Rebuild Question

As the trade deadline looms, the New York Jets face crucial decisions potentially involving pass-rusher Will McDonald IV to bolster their future prospects.

The Jets are heading into the trade deadline with a decision to make, and the name sitting at the center of it is Will McDonald IV.

New York’s 2-6 start has pushed the team toward seller territory, with Tuesday’s deadline looming and a Sunday matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs still to come. The Jets could easily be sitting at 2-7 by the time the deadline passes, which would make this a logical moment to move players who may not be part of the long-term plan.

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler and Dan Graziano said they do not believe running back Breece Hall is available. Even so, the Jets are still expected to keep trying to win games the rest of the way, something that would matter for the locker room as the organization looks ahead to the 2027 season.

One player who could be dealt is McDonald. Graziano said New York would be open to moving the 2023 first-round pick if the right offer comes along. That would make him a realistic target for a contender in need of edge help, especially with McDonald set to play next season on the $14.475 million fifth-year option.

McDonald broke through in a big way in 2024, posting 10.5 sacks and two forced fumbles in Year 2. This season, though, he has not been a strong fit in Aaron Glenn’s system. Through eight games, he has 14 tackles, three sacks, and one forced fumble, and his role has been limited enough that the Jets should at least listen if teams call.

Across his career, McDonald has 24.5 sacks and four forced fumbles. That production, plus his age and upside, should give New York a chance to draw interest if it wants to turn him into more draft capital before Tuesday.

The Jets already made major deadline moves last year, sending defensive lineman Quinnen Williams to the Dallas Cowboys and cornerback Sauce Gardner to the Indianapolis Colts. Those deals brought back three first-round picks and a second-round pick.

Now the team is positioned well for the 2027 draft, with three picks currently slated to land inside the top 10. That gives New York a chance to keep building for what comes next, even as it tries to stay competitive in the present.

Jets Suddenly Pulled Into Giants Trade Deadline Scenario

With the NFL trade deadline closing in, the market around Jonathan Taylor is starting to draw in more than one New York team. Taylor is still with the Indianapolis Colts, but he is widely expected to be moved, and the Giants are reportedly among the clubs pushing hardest to land him as they look for help in the backfield.

If the Giants miss out on Taylor, another name has surfaced in the conversation: Breece Hall. The Jets have said they do not plan to trade him, which makes the idea more of a speculative fallback than a real indication of movement, but it is a reminder of how quickly deadline chatter can spread once a premium running back becomes available. Jets Suddenly Have A Breece Hall Problem They Didn't Expect

Breece Halls injury absence has given the Jets a much clearer look at Braelon Allen, and the rookie has made the most of it. Over the past five games, Allen has forced his way into the conversation as a real part of the offense, showing the kind of power and consistency that can change how a coaching staff thinks about its backfield rotation.

Now the challenge is less about finding carries than figuring out how to distribute them once Hall is back. Hall and Allen bring different skill sets to the same position, and the Jets will have to sort out how to keep both involved without dulling either ones impact. It is the kind of good problem teams hope for, even if it comes with a little extra pressure on the staff to make it work. [Read more 🡒]

Aaron Glenn Takes A Stand In Jets Breece Hall-Braelon Allen Debate

Breece Halls absence has forced the Jets to sort through their backfield without much room for ambiguity, and Aaron Glenn has already made his preference clear. Even with Braelon Allen turning heads while Hall has been sidelined by a quad injury, Glenn confirmed Hall will remain the teams starting running back once he is back in the mix.

Hall has not played since Week 3, and there is still no timetable for his return, which leaves the Jets navigating a shaky stretch with a 2-6 record and the Chiefs up next. Glenn, who recently received a five-year contract extension, is trying to keep the depth chart steady while the team waits to see when its top back can actually get back on the field. [Read more 🡒]
