The Jets are heading into Week 1 with plenty of national attention and not much faith attached to it.
New York opens the 2026 season on the road Sunday against the Tennessee Titans, and the early power rankings mostly slot the Jets near the bottom of the league. The numbers vary a little from outlet to outlet, but the message is consistent: there’s intrigue here, talent here, and still a whole lot of uncertainty around Geno Smith and the offense.
USA TODAY placed the Jets at No. 27, writing, “They appear to have a nice nucleus of young players awaiting a QB to lead it for the long term − which is sure to give Week 1 opponent Robert Saleh flashbacks as he prepares the Titans to face his former team.”
Pro Football Talk had them at No. 29 and kept it short: “Jets fans find plenty of optimism in 0-0. They should enjoy it while it lasts.”
The Athletic also saw a team with more questions than answers, projecting a 5.6-win season and pointing to the defense as the side most likely to take a step forward. The outlet noted the additions of David Bailey, Demario Davis and Minkah Fitzpatrick, while also joking that the Jets “can’t go another year without an interception, right?
RIGHT?!” On offense, The Athletic said Geno Smith “isn’t inspiring,” even with Omar Cooper Jr. joining Garrett Wilson at receiver.
Bleacher Report put New York at No. 29 and framed the franchise as “stuck in limbo-and it's partly of their own doing.” The outlet pointed to the team’s three first-round picks in 2026 and the three more it is set to have in 2027, while also saying the veteran quarterback move with Geno Smith is unlikely to produce a playoff run or the franchise’s first winning season since 2015. Bleacher Report added that the roster has enough to win 5-6 games with competent quarterback play, but that would only make landing an elite quarterback prospect in 2027 more difficult.
CBS Sports slotted the Jets at No. 27 and offered a similar read: “hey will be better than last season, but how much better? I think the veterans they added will help keep them in games. Next year, they get their quarterback.”
FOX Sports ranked New York No. 28, up from No. 30, and listed Super Bowl odds of +20000. The outlet highlighted “a veteran defense, a strong offensive line, and a handful of talented skill players” before landing on the same issue everyone else did: “If only they had a QB to go with them. Geno Smith is the anchor on this promising ship”
Pro Football Focus was the harshest, putting the Jets at No. 30.
It gave New York 10% playoff odds and less than 1% to win the Super Bowl, while noting the offseason additions of Minkah Fitzpatrick and Demario Davis, plus first-round picks David Bailey, Kenyon Sadiq and Omar Cooper Jr. PFF also pointed to pressure on second-year head coach Aaron Glenn and said Geno Smith needs to improve quickly after posting a 60.9 overall PFF grade in Las Vegas, the second-worst among qualified passers.
ESPN’s outlook wasn’t much kinder. It gave the Jets a 6.5% chance to make the playoffs, a 2.0% chance to win the division and projected 6.0 wins, with the sixth-easiest strength of schedule.
ESPN listed the team’s biggest strength as the run game, saying New York returns four starting linemen and its top three backs from a unit that ranked 10th in rushing yards last season. The network added that if Breece Hall puts together another 1,000-yard season, it could ease the burden on Geno Smith, who leads the league in interceptions (52) and sacks (182) over the past four seasons.
ESPN warned that things “will get ugly without a competent run game.”
