The New York Jets are running out of room for bad injury news, and the wide receiver room is taking the hardest hit.
Tim Patrick is already on injured reserve with a groin injury. First-round rookie Omar Cooper Jr. is dealing with a high ankle sprain.
Arian Smith’s season ended in Week 2 after an ACL injury. That has left New York with just four receivers on the active roster: Garrett Wilson, Adonai Mitchell, Isaiah Williams, and Malik McClain, who was recently elevated from the practice squad.
Now Mitchell has landed on Thursday’s injury report with a finger injury and was limited, a new issue for the Jets’ second-leading receiver behind Wilson. He was not listed on Wednesday, so this is clearly a fresh development.
If Mitchell cannot play Sunday against the Detroit Lions, New York would be down to only three wideouts. At that point, the Jets would almost certainly need more practice squad elevations just to keep the position afloat.
There are at least a couple of veteran options in the mix. Sterling Shepard, the former New York Giants fan favorite signed last week after the extent of Cooper’s injury became clear, is expected to have a role against the Lions. Even at 33, he still offers a steady slot presence.
Tyler Johnson is another name to watch. He spent the 2025 season with the Jets and could also be elevated.
The bottom line for New York is simple: Mitchell’s status matters, and the Jets may need reinforcements in a hurry. At least one of Shepard or Johnson is expected to be active on Sunday.
Not everything on Thursday was grim. Edge rushers Joseph Ossai and David Bailey stayed on the same track they were on Wednesday, with Ossai limited and Bailey a full participant. Ossai appears to be moving in the right direction for a possible Jets debut, while Bailey looks set to go.
Elsewhere, return specialist Kene Nwangwu also appears headed for another absence, as he still has not played for the Jets in 2026. Minkah Fitzpatrick, Mason Taylor, and Kiko Mauigoa are also unlikely to suit up against Detroit.
