Jets Suddenly Face A Pass Rush Decision They Didn't Expect

In a bid to fortify their ailing edge rusher lineup, the New York Jets are considering seasoned Pro Bowler Matthew Judon despite his recent performance challenges.

With edge-rusher depth suddenly under strain, the Jets brought in a familiar veteran name for a look on Tuesday: Matthew Judon.

New York has taken hits on the outside in a hurry. Braiden McGregor was lost for the season in Week 4 with a pectoral injury, and Joseph Ossai also came out of Sunday’s win banged up, dealing with an ankle issue. Ossai had already missed the first two weeks of the regular season, plus most of the summer, because of a separate foot problem.

Will McDonald and Kingsley Enagbare were both listed as game-time decisions before Sunday’s matchup, but each was ultimately able to play.

That shortage pushed the Jets to work out Judon, according to NFL insider Tom Pelissero.

Judon, 34, has spent 11 seasons in the league since being taken in the fifth round in 2016. His career has taken him through Baltimore, New England, Atlanta, Miami, Buffalo, and San Francisco. The peak of his resume came from 2019 through 2022, when he made four straight Pro Bowls and piled up 43.5 sacks, including 15.5 in 2022 with the Patriots.

The last few seasons have been much tougher. After that big year in New England, Judon was limited to four games the next season because of a lower bicep injury, though he still managed four sacks. In 2024, he landed with the Falcons and put up 5.5 sacks across 17 games, but the fit never really clicked.

He signed a one-year, $6 million deal with the Dolphins in 2025, but the production dried up there too. Judon had just three quarterback hits and no sacks in 13 games before Miami released him in December.

He then spent 12 days with the 49ers. Elevated from the practice squad for Week 4, he recorded one stop on 15 snaps before being released on Saturday.

The Jets are clearly looking at the résumé as much as the recent box scores. Judon still brings the kind of track record that turns heads - four Pro Bowls, a long run as a disruptive pass rusher - even if the recent production has fallen off. Since 2024, he has appeared in 32 games with 18 starts, finishing with 5.5 sacks, 36 pressures, 12 quarterback hits, and a fumble recovery.

Jets Fans Suddenly Have A Brutal Packers-Cowboys Rooting Dilemma

After Week 5 of the 2026 season, the Jets are in a strange spot where the standings are only part of the story. Their own record, plus the way things are shaking out with other teams tied to their draft capital, has New York positioned to enter next spring with major ammunition for the 2027 NFL draft, the kind of setup that can shape an offseason before it even starts.

One of the more immediate swings could come from Sunday nights Packers-Cowboys matchup, which carries real significance for how the Jets first-round haul ultimately sorts out. For a fan base used to watching games with draft implications in mind, this is the rare week where rooting interests are split in an especially awkward way, because the result could determine which team leaves New York in a better spot when the board starts taking shape. Jets May Finally Get The Chance Fans Have Been Waiting On

Aaron Glenn left the door open after the game, suggesting the Jets are getting close to welcoming back several key pieces who have been out hurt. For a team that has spent much of the season juggling personnel and trying to find its rhythm on offense, the idea of getting healthier now matters almost as much as anything else. Tim Patrick has already pointed to the talent level in the room when everyone is available, and that kind of depth has been part of the appeal of this roster from the start.

The timing could also matter on defense, where the Jets have leaned heavily on zone coverage and have seen young players begin to make a real imprint. David Baileys five sacks in five games have put him in rare company, while Jowon Briggs and Azareyeh Thomas have both sounded encouraged by how the group is performing and how Bailey is affecting games. There is still a little unfinished business on the injury front, though, and one more check still has to be cleared before the picture is complete. [Read more 🡒]

Jets Defense Finally Delivered The Kind Of Disruption Fans Needed

The Jets got the kind of disruptive performance they had been waiting for, and it showed up in a win over the Browns. New Yorks defense kept collapsing the pocket and finished with eight sacks, a welcome jolt after earlier outings had left plenty of questions about whether the pass rush could consistently change games.

For Cleveland, the aftermath was as blunt as the scoreboard. Head coach Todd Monken acknowledged the protection breakdowns were unacceptable and said improvement has to come in coaching, in protection and in execution, a familiar list after a night when the Jets made the Browns pay for every missed block and slow read.
