David Bailey’s status for Week 8 is suddenly a major storyline for the New York Jets, and it comes at the worst possible time.
The No. 2 pick has become one of the few sources of disruption on a pass rush that has been one of the NFL’s worst, but he was out of practice for a second straight day because of a groin injury. That puts his availability against the Las Vegas Raiders very much in doubt, even as the Jets stare at what looks like a must-win game.
If Bailey can’t go, New York may have to lean on Will McDonald and Kingsley Enagbare off the edge. McDonald is playing less than ever before, while Enagbare simply isn’t a No. 1 pass rusher in the NFL. That’s not the kind of backup plan a team wants when the defense is already coming off being overpowered by a previously winless Miami Dolphins team.
Bailey’s potential absence would also come with another hit up front. T’Vondre Sweat is also likely to miss the game because of a knee issue, which would leave the Jets without their two best defensive linemen.
The broader picture looks even rougher: four-fifths of the projected Week 1 defensive line could be on the mend, with Harrison Phillips the only projected starter still healthy. Joseph Ossai’s 2026 season looks like a complete wash due to his injuries, David Onyemata remains out, and both Sweat and Bailey are long shots to suit up against Las Vegas.
That makes Bailey’s rookie production all the more frustrating to possibly lose. In seven games, he has posted 5.5 sacks and three forced fumbles, and he has also been better than expected against the run after that part of his game was viewed as a concern coming out of Texas Tech.
The matchup might have been a cleaner spot for him, too. The Raiders’ offensive line has improved from the 2025 season, but Tyler Linderbaum has not played like a nearly $30 million-per-year center, Jackson Powers-Johnson has already been benched, and the tackles have been inconsistent depending on the opponent.
Without Bailey, the Jets may have to look elsewhere for answers. McDonald would be in line for more snaps, and preseason standout Nate Lynn could see an expanded role after recording a sack on his only pass-rush snap in the loss to the Dolphins. Week 8 could also open the door for Darrell Jackson Jr., who might move into the starting lineup if Sweat sits and Jowon Briggs keeps struggling.
For a defensive line that has been a huge disappointment, the Jets may be forced into changes simply because they have no choice. Finding something that works now matters more than ever.

Jets Starter Finally Explained His Sudden Week 7 Absence
Jarvis Brownlee Jr.s sudden absence from the Jets Week 7 matchup with the Dolphins made more sense once the reason came into focus. The starting nickel cornerback was inactive for disciplinary reasons after missing multiple mandatory meetings, leaving Aaron Glenn to answer questions without spelling out the details at first. ESPN later reported that Brownlee was fined and benched by the team, a notable development for a player who had been part of the defensive rotation heading into the game.
With Brownlee sidelined, rookie defensive back DAngelo Ponds saw a bigger role in Miami, giving the Jets a look at their depth in a spot that was suddenly up for grabs. The good news for New York is that Brownlee is expected back for Week 8 against the Raiders, but the episode still serves as a reminder that availability can change quickly when discipline enters the picture. Jets Coaching Pressure Is Suddenly All About Aaron Glenn's Timeline
The Jets latest loss pushed them to 2-5 and, almost immediately, the conversation shifted from the scoreboard to Aaron Glenns future. Any time a season goes sideways this quickly, the head coach becomes the easiest target, and Glenn is no exception after a rough stretch that has left the team searching for answers and outside observers wondering how long the patience will last.
Even so, there are reasons this situation may not turn into a snap decision. Glenn has earned respect inside the building for his work developing young defensive talent, and he still has support from players and key veterans who see value in what he is trying to build. The bigger question now is whether the pressure around him stays at a simmer through the rest of the year, or whether the noise around his timeline gets louder before the season is over. Jets Tried To Address A Growing Defensive Line Problem But Missed Out
With injuries piling up along the defensive line, the Jets have been searching for help any way they can find it. They put in a waiver claim on defensive tackle Jonah Laulu, a move that fit the urgency of the moment as they try to patch together a front that has been hit hard and is heading into a Week 8 matchup with the Raiders.
The problem is the Jets did not land the reinforcement they were after, and the search has not exactly gotten easier. New York also brought in three defensive tackles for workouts on Tuesday and came away without a signing, leaving the team still sorting through options while trying to stabilize a run defense that could be tested against a Las Vegas offense that has struggled on the ground.
