The Jets are bringing back running back and kick returner Kene Nwangwu on a one-year deal, showcasing their confidence in his dual-threat capabilities. The agreement is reportedly worth $2 million, with $1 million guaranteed, and could reach a maximum value of $3 million. This marks the second consecutive year Nwangwu has inked a one-year contract with New York.
Nwangwu, now 28, made his mark during his college years at Iowa State before being drafted in the fourth round of the 2021 NFL Draft by the Minnesota Vikings. His rookie contract was a four-year deal valued at $4.23 million, including a signing bonus of $752,800. However, as the Vikings trimmed their roster to meet the 53-man limit, Nwangwu found himself released.
The Saints initially claimed him off waivers, but a failed physical led to his release. Nwangwu eventually landed on the Jets’ practice squad, where he worked his way up to the active roster.
He re-signed with the Jets in 2025, and his performance that year included appearing in 12 games with 13 carries for 49 yards. He also proved his worth on special teams, returning 18 kickoffs for 604 yards and scoring a touchdown.
Nwangwu's ability to contribute both on the ground and in the return game makes him a valuable asset for the Jets as they continue to bolster their roster for the upcoming season. His return could provide the team with a dynamic option in both offensive and special teams play.
