With Week 1 against the Tennessee Titans only three days away, the New York Jets still haven’t locked down one of their biggest special teams decisions.
That job remains a live battle between kickers Blake Grupe and Jason Sanders, Jets special teams coordinator Chris Banjo said Thursday. Grupe is currently the only kicker on the active roster, while Sanders sits on the practice squad.
“So our kickers, love the competition that they’re in. They’ve been doing a great job coming to work, putting their hand down, and trying to be their best selves every day. And we’re excited about it,” said Banjo.”
Banjo said the Jets are looking for the same thing from whoever wins the job.
“Confidence and consistency,” he answered. “Just the consistency aspect in everything we’re asking them to do.”
Sanders had originally been announced as the winner of a kicking competition over Cade York. But after he missed two kicks in the Jets’ final preseason game, New York moved on, released him, claimed Grupe off waivers and then brought Sanders back on the practice squad.
Sanders has appeared in 116 NFL games since 2018, all with the Miami Dolphins. He has made 84.6% of his field goal tries and 96.6% of his extra points.
In 2024, he converted 90.2% of his attempts and hit 12 of 14 from 50 yards and beyond. His 2025 season never got off the ground after a hip injury cost him the entire year.
Grupe has played in 50 games since 2023, mostly with the New Orleans Saints. He has connected on 79.8% of his field goals and 97.7% of his extra points. He finished the 2025 season with the Colts by making all 11 of his field goals and all 10 extra points, including four makes from 50-plus yards, with a long of 60.

DAngelo Ponds is back in practice drills at a helpful time for the Jets, who have been waiting to see their second-round rookie cornerback get onto the field after he missed the entire preseason with a calf strain.
