Jets Starter Finally Explained His Sudden Week 7 Absence

Jarvis Brownlee Jr.'s unexpected benching in Week 7 sheds light on disciplinary actions within the New York Jets, as the team turns to inexperienced rookie D'Angelo Ponds amidst preparation challenges.

Jarvis Brownlee Jr. has put himself in an unwelcome spotlight after missing multiple mandatory meetings led to a benching and team fine in Week 7, according to ESPN’s Rich Cimini.

Brownlee, who started at nickel corner for the New York Jets, was inactive for Sunday’s game against the Miami Dolphins even though he had practiced all week. Head coach Aaron Glenn didn’t spell out the reason after the 28-25 loss, but Cimini reported that the third-year defensive back told ESPN he was disciplined for the missed meetings.

“Jarvis Brownlee Jr. was benched last Sunday and fined by the team because he missed multiple mandatory meetings, he told ESPN on Thursday. Brownlee said he couldn't recall the amount of the fine, except to say he was notified in a letter from the team. He said he missed 'more than one' meeting, adding that he understood the discipline.”

The timing made the decision stand out even more. Brownlee had just come out of a Week 6 game against the New England Patriots in which he blew multiple coverage assignments, and instead of responding with a cleaner week of preparation, he ended up on the sideline for disciplinary reasons.

With Brownlee out, rookie defensive back D’Angelo Ponds picked up more snaps in the slot. That gave the Jets a closer look at a young player they want to become a fixture in the secondary, but the results so far show he still has work to do. Ponds has played only 63 defensive snaps across five games and has allowed a 104.2 passer rating when targeted, though that number comes on just three completions.

His slow start isn’t entirely on him. A calf injury cost Ponds almost the entire offseason, including training camp and the preseason, which left him without the reps most rookies need before stepping into NFL action.

Still, New York clearly needs Brownlee back. He may not be perfect, but he’s the best nickel option the Jets have right now, and his absence was felt.

Brownlee is expected to return to the lineup for Week 8 against the Las Vegas Raiders. With Brock Bowers and Michael Mayer looming, the Jets will want their regular nickelback on the field.

Jets Coaching Pressure Is Suddenly All About Aaron Glenn's Timeline

The Jets latest loss pushed them to 2-5 and, almost immediately, the conversation shifted from the scoreboard to Aaron Glenns future. Any time a season goes sideways this quickly, the head coach becomes the easiest target, and Glenn is no exception after a rough stretch that has left the team searching for answers and outside observers wondering how long the patience will last.

Even so, there are reasons this situation may not turn into a snap decision. Glenn has earned respect inside the building for his work developing young defensive talent, and he still has support from players and key veterans who see value in what he is trying to build. The bigger question now is whether the pressure around him stays at a simmer through the rest of the year, or whether the noise around his timeline gets louder before the season is over. Jets Tried To Address A Growing Defensive Line Problem But Missed Out

With injuries piling up along the defensive line, the Jets have been searching for help any way they can find it. They put in a waiver claim on defensive tackle Jonah Laulu, a move that fit the urgency of the moment as they try to patch together a front that has been hit hard and is heading into a Week 8 matchup with the Raiders.

The problem is the Jets did not land the reinforcement they were after, and the search has not exactly gotten easier. New York also brought in three defensive tackles for workouts on Tuesday and came away without a signing, leaving the team still sorting through options while trying to stabilize a run defense that could be tested against a Las Vegas offense that has struggled on the ground. Jets Suddenly Face A Defensive Front Problem In Must-Win Week 8

The Jets defensive front is suddenly looking thin at a bad time, with David Bailey missing practice for two straight days because of a groin injury. As they prepare for a Week 8 matchup with the Raiders, the injury picture up front has started to cloud what had already been a must-hold-up spot for a defense that needs its line to set the tone.

T'Vondre Sweat is also dealing with a knee injury, which adds another layer of uncertainty to the rotation. If the Jets are forced to patch things together on the edge, Will McDonald and Kingsley Enagbare could be pushed into starting roles, leaving New York to navigate a front-seven test with less margin for error than it would like.
